EMC’s VNX HPC Solutions for Lustre Environments: 10s of GB/sec Bandwidth and 10s of Petabytes of Capacity

by Mark Kidd

EMC has announced its new VNX HPC series, including a preconfigured hardware and software appliance for commercial Lustre environments. The VNX HPC series includes metadata and object servers, EMC VNX5100 metadata storage, VNX7500 object storage, and Terascala LustreStack software. This product family also adds Infiniband connectivity, scaling performance to 10s of GB/s bandwidth with capacities up to 10s of petabytes.

This product family also adds Infiniband connectivity, scaling performance to 10s of GB/s bandwidth with capacities up to 10s of petabytes.

The VNX HPC series offers a base configuration that delivers 8GB/sec read and 5.3GB/sec write performance with bandwidth expansion modules for linear scalability beyond 10s of GB/s reads and writes, as measured by EMC’s XDD benchmarks. With the addition of capacity expansion modules, VNX HPC scales to 10s of petabytes.

Configuring the Lustre SAN file system for peak performance poses obstacles for commercial organizations with limited budgets and IT capacities. EMC’s VNX HPC series is intended to make Lustre accessible to companies of all sizes in industries such as financial services, life sciences, manufacturing, and oil and gas by integrating Lustre with Terascala for end-to-end management and EMC global support.
