Hewlett Packard Enterprise Updates 3PAR StoreServ Family

by storagereview

Upgrading its portfolio of high-storage options, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) unveiled support for expanded capacity across its StoreServ family. To improve upon its product, HPE now supports 3D NAND solid state drives (SSDs) with capacities of 7.68 and 15.36TB. The HPE 3PAR StoreServ can now offer a maximum storage capacity of 24 petabytes of usable space in a single all-flash array.

HPE identifies two technologies that enable the higher capacity system: 3PAR Adaptive Sparing, and 3PAR Express Layout. The latter of these provides concurrent access from storage controllers to SSDs for higher data throughput, while the former ensures you can use any SSD you want regardless of size. The 3PAR system uses all-flash software defined storage (SDS) to make the most of each storage device. Additionally, using the StoreVirtual tool allows you combine all available storage into one combined resource pool; an approach that HPE calls a “composable data fabric.”

In addition to the improvements in storage density, HPE also upgraded the Recovery Manager Central (RMC) application to include Oracle Databases, SAP HANA, and 3PAR File Persona. This comes as a supplement to the support already offered for VMware, Microsoft SQL, and Microsoft VSS apps.

3PAR has supported unified file, block, and object access for well over a year. Now, it will be adding to these capabilities with new security and archiving features:

  • File Lock for 3PAR File Persona, which protects data consistency and supports governance by making files immutable, enabling policy-based retention, preventing file deletion and supporting data validation.
  • NTFS security mode and cross-protocol locking will allow 3PAR File Persona to enhance security for Windows environments as well as deliver more seamless group file sharing between protocols including SMB and NFS.
  • HPE StoreEver Archive Manager software, which lowers the cost of retaining 3PAR file data to be archived on tape yet enables data to be accessed transparently as if still online.

Pricing and Availability

The 7.68TB SSDs are now available worldwide starting at $20,748 while the 15.36TB SSDs are slated for a release sometime in the second half of 2016. This SSD will go for roughly $40,000.

A Docker-Integrated Volume Plugin for HPE 3PAR StoreServ Storage will be available sometime this month in June on the HPE Storage GitHub page. HPE Recovery Manager Central (RMC) with support for SAP HANA and 3PAR File Persona is now available worldwide at no cost to customers who have an existing RMC license and a valid support contract. Licensing for new customers starts at $1,000.

HPE Recovery Manager Central for Oracle (RMC-O) will be released in July starting at $2,500. HPE indicates that customers with an existing 3PAR Recovery Manager for Oracle license and a valid support contract will be able to upgrade at no additional cost.
