IBM has announced it will be the first manufacturer to offer its own version of Fusion-io’s ioScale PCIe flash adaptors since Fusion-io announced that ioScale would be available in smaller minimum orders early this year. Offered at 825GB, 1.6TB, and 3.2TB, the IBM Flash Adapter Enterprise Value lineup will provide IBM an entry point into the important market for server PCIe storage, an entry point that is built on proven ioScale technology. With expected availability within a month, the new flash adapter lineup means that IBM customers can drop-in accelerated PCIe storage with the benefit of support and a limited one-year warranty from IBM.
ioScale has seen success as webscale and cloud computing have driven forward the demand for high-performance onboard storage as an alternative or supplement to arrays of hard drives and solid state drives. IBM’s acquisition of Texas Memory Systems in 2012 expanded IBM’s flash storage portfolio to include key technology for its storage appliance offerings, but before now the company has not offered its own in-host PCIe flash cards. ioScale incorporates self-healing, wear management, and predictive monitoring functionality as well as ioMemory SDK and ioMemory API support for atomic writes and directFS.
