LaCie has announced the latest version of its 5big, which now features Thunderbolt 2 technology, hardware RAID and industry-leading capacity. The new LaCie 5big is nearly twice as fast as its predecessor, boasting speeds quoted up to 1050MB/s and is equipped with Seagate’s new 6TB 7200RPM hard disks, which allows for a 20% capacity increase making it the most compact 30TB storage device on the market. With these enhancements, the new LaCie 5big gives video professionals a huge boost in capacity as well as ample bandwidth for improving 4K workflows right on the desktop.

In addition to offering sustained speeds of up to 1050MB/s, if connected to three LaCie 5bigs in parallel to a new Mac Pro, users will get up to 90TB of capacity and speeds of up to 3000MB/s on a single workstation. This is enough bandwidth to edit several video streams in native 4K resolution and allows videographers working in Apple Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere to get maximum quality from footage and view native 4K edits in real time.

The LaCie 5big also offers a variety of RAID modes, which enable users to tailor the product to their needs while delivering sustained performance, better flexibility and the ability to connect the product to another computer while keeping the RAID configuration.

RAID modes 5 and 6 provide complete data protection against disk failure as well as providing excellent speed and capacity, which makes the LaCie 5big an ideal solution for users that want to use a single storage product for both video editing and backup. Additionally, in these protected RAID modes, the LaCie 5big’s hot-swappable disks mean zero data loss or downtime, even in the case of disk failure.

With two Thunderbolt 2 ports, Professionals can daisy chain up to six Thunderbolt devices to a computer using a single cable (which is included). Thunderbolt 2 is also backward compatible and uses the same cables and connectors as first-generation Thunderbolt devices and computers. Professionals can now also create a plug and play 4K video editing environment with increased capacity, incredible speed and convenience to their workflow.

The LaCie 5big's cooling system ensures long-term reliability by preventing overheating. The LaCie system consists of three key components: an innovative heat-dissipating aluminum casing, a Noctua cooling fan, and jumbo heat exhausts. The Noctua NF-P12 fan pulls heat away from the internal components all the while producing very little noise. This professional cooling system makes the LaCie 5big reliable and ideal for even the most noise-sensitive creative environments. Additionally, the 5big enclosure is made from a seamless aluminum cast, which acts as armor to protect internal components.

Availability and Pricing

The new LaCie 5big will be available this quarter in 10, 20 or 30TB capacities via the LaCie online store and LaCie resellers. Pricing will be announced when the product is available for purchase. The LaCie 5big is also backed by a three-year limited warranty, which includes complimentary web-based resources, expert in-house technical support and worldwide repair and/or replacement coverage.
