Today the Lenovo Data Center Group (DCG) announced the launch of two new servers, the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR645 and SR665. Both of the new servers are dual-socket and leverage the AMD EPYC 7002 processors. This follows in the line of over AMD EPYC servers being released such as the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR635.

Certain industries, financial services, retail, and manufacturing, need higher performance. The bottom line is that there is a deep need for faster transaction processing, improved data analytics, and greater grid-computing capacity. Of course, the performance needs to come in both cost effective and for a good TCO. Lenovo has turned its eyes to the AMD EPYC line for this cost-effective performance. Leveraging these high core count CPUs not only add more threads, it also allows for more RAM, and PCIe 4.0 devices like storage and GPUs.
First up with the 1U Lenovo ThinkSystem SR645. While it is a small server, it can house two second gen AMD EPYC CPUs, up to 4TB of memory, up to 10 NVMe drives, and an up to three PCIe 4.0 expansion slots. This makes the SR645 a tiny powerhouse and should decrease network bottlenecks in HPCworkloads.

For the 2U side of things, there is the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR665. This server is geared more for software-defined workloads, database, big data & analytics, virtualization, virtualized desktop infrastructure (VDI),and HPC/AI workloads. This server also houses two AMD EPYC CPUs and up to 4TB of memory. However, the SR665 can have up to 32 NVMe drives and up to six single width GPUs (or three double width).
