QNAP TS-1635AX NAS Now Available

by Lyle Smith

QNAP had announced the immediate availability of their TS-1635AX NAS, directly replacing the versatile TS-1635. The new NAS solution is highlighted by its slick-looking build, 16 drive bays (twelve 3.5-inch and four 2.5-inch), dual 10GbE SFP+ ports, Marvell ARMADA 8040 ARMv8 Cortex-A72 64-bit quad-core 1.6 GHz processor and two M.2 SATA SSD slots (2280 form factor). It also supports Linux virtualization, SSD caching, and Qtier 2.0, which opens it up to a range of different use cases.

The TS-1635AX’s support for Qtier 2.0 enables automatic tiered storage with a “cache-like mechanism” in volumes and LUNs. These technologies aim to enhance the overall performance of applications where high-efficiency data access is needed. QNAP also supports containerized virtualization (LXC and Docker) and Linux command-line interface virtual machines for those looking to deploy virtualization applications.

As far as connectivity goes, the TS-1635AX features the usual two built-in 10GbE SFP+ ports and two Gigabit (1000BASE-T) ports and can be expanded via two PCIe 3.0 cards, including the QWA-AC2600 wireless adapter, QM2 M.2 SSD/10GbE adapters, and USB 3.1 Gen2 (10Gbps) adapters.

Like all QNAP NAS solutions, the TS-1635AX also runs the company’s QTS operating system, which supports RAID 50/60 and offers app-driven features such as Qboost and OCR Converter. Users can also install apps from trusted third parties.
