Samsung Announces TCO-Optimized, High-Performance SSDs; PM1633, PM1725 and PM953

Samsung has announced three TCO-optimized, high-performance SSDs–the PM1633, PM1725 and PM953–adding to its portfolio of advanced enterprise and data center SSDs. Built specifically for OEMs, the company’s new SSDs all leverage Samsung’s 3-bit MLC V-NAND flash memory to offer superior performance and reliability in high capacities points. Yesterday, Samsung had announced the mass production of their 256Gb 3D V-NAND flash memory based on 48 layers of 3-bit MLC arrays for use in SSDs.


Samsung has announced three TCO-optimized, high-performance SSDs–the PM1633, PM1725 and PM953–adding to its portfolio of advanced enterprise and data center SSDs. Built specifically for OEMs, the company’s new SSDs all leverage Samsung’s 3-bit MLC V-NAND flash memory to offer superior performance and reliability in high capacities points. Yesterday, Samsung had announced the mass production of their 256Gb 3D V-NAND flash memory based on 48 layers of 3-bit MLC arrays for use in SSDs.

The PM1633 is Samsung’s latest SAS SSD designed to satisfy all requirements of SAS interface-based systems and is quoted to deliver random read and write speeds of up to 160,000 and 18,000 IOPS, respectively, as well as sequential read and write speeds of up to 1,100MB/s and 1,000MB/s. The 2.5” 12Gb/s SAS SSD will be available in 480GB, 960GB, 1.92TB and 3.84TB models.

Samsung has designed the PM1725 to cater towards next-generation enterprise storage market. This new half-height, half-length card-type NVMe SSD offers high-performance data transmission in 3.2TB or 6.4TB storage capacities. The new NVMe card is quoted with random read speed of up to 1,000,000 IOPS and random writes up to 120,000 IOPS. In addition, sequential reads can reach up to an impressive 5,500MB/s with sequential writes up to 1,800MB/s. The 6.4TB PM1725 also features five DWPDs for five years, which is a total writing of 32TBs per day during that timeframe.

Samsung has also announced an updated version of their SM951 M.2 SSD, which we reviewed earlier this year. The new PM953 model comes in an NVMe interface and is available in both M.2 and 2.5” form factors, allowing it to be used in a wide range of applications and use cases including large-scale data centers, mobile workstations ultra-slim notebooks, and high-end desktops. The M.2 version will be offered in capacities of 480GB and 960GB, while the 2.5” model will ship in 480GB, 960GB and 1.92TB capacities.
