What is the Xilinx Versal ACAP?

Xilinx's Versal units are adaptive compute acceleration platforms (ACAP). An ACAP is a highly integrated, multicore, heterogeneous compute platform that can be changed at both the hardware and software levels to adapt to the needs of a wide range of applications and workloads in data center, automotive, 5G wireless, wired and defense markets. Through a host of tools, software, libraries, IP, middleware, and frameworks, ACAPs enable dynamically customizable accelerated computing solutions through industry-standard design flows. The Versal ACAP is built from the ground up to be software programmable. Xilinx's Versal architecture features a flexible, multi-terabit per-second network-on-chip (NoC). The NoC integrates all engines and key interfaces, making the platform available at boot and easily programmed by software developers, data scientists, and hardware developers alike.

Xilinx’s Versal AI Core series features lower latency than its companion Prime series. Versal AI Core is targeted at cloud and networking use cases where Prime is designed more for broad applicability across multiple markets and is optimized for connectivity and in-line acceleration.  Both series use dual-core ARM Cortex A72 processors as well as dual-core Arm Cortex-R5F real-time processors.

Availability

The Versal AI Core and Versal Prime series will be generally available in the second half of 2019.
