Hitachi has announced the new Hitachi Unified Storage VM (HUS VM), a solution for small and medium enterprises to virtualize block, file, and object storage, including multivendor storage. According to Hitachi, the HUS VM requires 40% less power to operate and cool than comparably configured solutions from other vendors such as the EMC VMAX 10K.

IBM has announced the zEnterprise EC12 mainframe server, which offers over 100 configurable cores, with 25% more performance per core and 50% more total capacity than its predecessor. IBM has enhanced the zEC12 to demonstrate the performance of mainframe technology across applications like hybrid cloud infrastructure, high-volume transaction processing, and analytics.  

HP announced it is expanding its Converged Cloud portfolio with new solutions for VMware vCloud Suite 5.1 to assist clients in converting existing virtualization deployments into private and hybrid cloud environments. HP also now offers a PCI Compliance Security Solution Stack for virtual and cloud environments that meets all security-based PCI DSS controls.

EMC and VMware used the VMworld conference as the platform to announce that vSphere Data Protection (VDP), powered by EMC Avamar technology, has replaced vSphere Data Recovery in the new VMware vSphere 5.1. VDP leverages Avamar technology including variable-length deduplication, full support of Changed Block Tracking, and single-step restore.

At VMworld, NetApp has unveiled new integration between VMware’s vSphere 5.1 and NetApp’s Data ONTAP 8 operating in Cluster-Mode. Data ONTAP 8 extends VMware with the ability to transparently migrate data within a cluster to provide load balancing, hardware maintenance, or technology refreshes.
