Whether end users are building a new system or upgrading their old one, NVMe storage is becoming an ideal choice due to its high performance, low latency nature. A couple years back, Crucial (Micron’s global brand of memory and storage) released the P1 for a higher performat, cost-effective drive. The P1 came with QLC that has both benefits and downsides. The drives announced today, skip the QLC NAND for a high-performance focus.
First up, aimed at gamers and creative professionals, is the Crucial P5. With read speeds up to 3.4GB/s and write speeds up to 3GB/s the drive can meet most needs of gaming, editing, designing, or multitasking. The P5 comes in capacities up to 2TB in an M.2 form factor. The drive has built-in reliability with MTTF of 2 million hours and built-in data security though its full-drive encryption capability. Crucial states that the drive is widely compatible as well.
Not everyone is a gamer (for some reason) or a creative professional. For those that are more in line with daily computing needs but want higher performance, there is the Crucial P2. The P2 comes with speeds up to 2.3GB/s and up to 1TB of capacity. This should be more than enough for day to day needs. The P2 is higher in capacity at a lower cost, as little as $55. This leads some to speculate that it leverages QLC. Reaching out to Micron, they confirmed that the drive currently uses Micron TLC 3D NAND technology but “over time may include a mix of Micron’s TLC and QLC NAND technologies.”
Availability
The Crucial P5 is expected to be available soon. The Crucial P2 is available now for as little as $55. Both are backed by a five-year warranty.
