NetApp & Canonical Collaborate To Supply Open Cloud Solutions

NetApp and Canonical are collaborating to help enterprises build automated, scalable and reliable private and hybrid clouds based on open technologies. These open cloud solutions would be based on Ubuntu, Ubuntu OpenStack and Juju and would help customers to integrate NetApp storage and data management solutions with Canonical’s Ubuntu OpenStack.

WDC Announces New iNAND EFD For Connected, Autonomous Cars

Western Digital Corp. (WDC) introduced its newest embedded flash drive (EFD) aimed at the automotive industry, the iNAND 7250A. This SanDisk branded EFD has been designed to support data demands of the wave of newly introduced autonomous driving vehicles. Key specs and features include:

  • Adheres to ISO26262 design guidelines for nonvolatile memory-based products
  • Capacities up to 64GB
  • Compliant AEC-Q100 Grade 2 (-40oC to 105oC) and AEC-Q100 Grade 3 (-40oC to +85oC)
  • Built with enhanced enterprise class flash memory and controller
  • e.MMC 5.1 specification
  • Up to 110MB/s sequential write and up to 300MB/s sequential read

Red Hat Releases OpenStack Platform 11

At the OpenStack Summit 2017, Red Hat announced the latest version of its massively-scalable and agile cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Red Hat OpenStack Platform 11. The latest version comes with improved upgradability, expanded network and network function virtualization support, and enhanced management with Red Hat CloudForms.

Red Hat OpenStack Platform 11 is expected to be available in the coming weeks.

TYAN Showcases Its New GPU-Optimized Platforms

TYAN showcased its new GPU-optimized platforms at the GPU Technology Conference. These new 4U GPU servers support NVIDIA Pascal based Tesla GPU accelerators. The two models include the FT76-B7922, a Quad Socket Xeon E7 4800/8800 v4 server platform with both 96 DIMM slots and support for 4x NVIDIA Tesla P100/P40 GPU accelerators. And the FT77C-B7079 that supports up to 8x NVIDIA Tesla P100/P40/P4 GPU accelerators with 2x Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 processors.

Virtual Instruments Releases VirtualWisdom 5.2

At Dell EMC World 2017, Virtual Instruments announced the latest version of its analytics platform, VirtualWisdom 5.2. The company also announced a new lower-cost, entry-level 12-port 16Gb SAN Performance Probe for Fibre Channel environments. Key features of VirtualWisdom 5.2 include:

  • New topology visualizations that allow users to instantly identify fabric component speed mismatches
  • New dashboard enhancements that make it easier to produce application-focused views that aggregate data across key infrastructure components
  • Expanded usability to accelerate systems configuration and apply the right analytics to accelerate problem resolution
  • New personalization pages so users can select their preferred User Interface theme;
  • Enhanced navigation support for more breadcrumbs, as well as detailed and turnkey selection options for analytical views and preferences
  • REST API access with token-based authentication
  • Beta support for the hyperconverged VxRails platform including VMware VSAN data collection, which can be incorporated and correlated with the VirtualWisdom management and analytics platform.  In addition, VirtualWisdom will support the Dell EMC ScaleIO software-defined-storage platform later this year.

VirtualWisdom 5.2 is expected to be available on May 16.

Cisco & NetApp Are Now Strategic Investors In Datos IO

Datos IO has announced that both Cisco Investments and Netapp have become strategic investors in the company. The company states that it will use the investment to “further its revolutionary application-centric approach that provides customers with dramatic backup storage efficiency and rich data management services at a granular level.” Datos IO’s main product is RecoverX

Cavium Accelerates Adoption Of NVMe Over Fabrics

Cavium announced that its that its family of QLogic Gen 6 Fibre Channel and FastLinQ Ethernet adapters will support NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) technology. With the ability, Caviums adaptors will now enable NVMe storage devices to be shared, pooled, and managed more effectively across a fabric.

Select partners of Cavium have begun an early access program for NVMe over Fibre Channel (FC-NVMe) and NVMe over Universal RDMA (NVMe-oF). The company is expected to expand the program next quarter.

Micron Announces New All-Flash Ceph Storage Reference Architecture

At OpenStack Summit this week, Micron announced its new all-flash Ceph storage architecture. The new architecture leverages Red Hat Ceph storage and Supermicro 1U Ultra SuperServer as well as Micron 9100 MAX NVMe SSDs. From a performance standpoint Micron is stating that the new solution (with a 4 cluster node) can hit 1.1 million IOPS and 21.8GB/s throughput while supporting over 7,000 ultra-high-definition data streams simultaneously.

Cisco Announces Intent To Acquire MindMeld

Cisco has announced its intent to acquire the privately held artificial intelligence company, MindMeld Inc. MindMeld has been able to develop machine learning that helps users interact with voice and chat assistants in a more natural way. Cisco will be acquiring the company for $125 million in cash and assumed equity and will be leverage the new technology in its network and cloud solutions.
