Today NVM Express has released its 1.2 specification. NVM Express (NVMe) is already a high-performance standard for enterprise and client non-volatile memory based storage solutions (NVM developed the specification for accessing SSDs on a PCIe bus). NVMe 1.2 extends to a new level of enterprise and client functionality with new data center and client features. Along with the updated specification NVM is also announcing it is developing new specifications such as management interface for NVMe devices and NVM Express over fabrics.

New features for client systems include:
- Enhanced power management
- Mobile oriented capabilities
- A feature that supports designing high-performance SSDs without local DRAM
- Enables smaller Ball Grid Array based form factor
- NVMe can now be used in fan-less two-in-one laptops
New features for enterprises include:
- Live firmware updates
- Reduced latency in environments with one or more PCIe switches
NVM’s Management Interface Specification will support IT managers’ ability to manage PCIe SSDs, by defining a software interface. NVM Express over fabrics will extend the benefits of NVMe to SSDs using a fabric (such as Ethernet, InfiniBand, or Fibre Channel) as an attach point verses a PCI Express.
Availability
The NVM Express 1.2 is available now. The Management Interface Specification is targeted for publication in the first quarter of 2015. The NVM Express over fabrics specification is targeted for the second quarter of 2015.
