StorageOS Unveils Its New Container-Based Storage Software

by Adam Armstrong

Today at DockerCon 2016 in Seattle, Washington, a new on-demand storage startup, StorageOS, announced the beta of its new container-based storage software. StorageOS claims that their new software will make it easier for software developers to create, test, deploy, scale and rebuild containerized applications with enterprise-class production storage. They go on to claim that their new software-based storage solution improves application development and testing by automating the management of persistent containerized storage, increasing scale and availability and securely moving data between servers, virtual machines or clouds.

They go on to claim that their new software-based storage solution improves application development and testing by automating the management of persistent containerized storage, increasing scale and availability and securely moving data between servers, virtual machines or clouds.

Four storage professionals that worked in the financial services industry that saw something in the storage industry they disliked created StorageOS. Headquartered in London and founded in 2013, StorageOS was built around the idea of having developers, DevOps and WinOps teams build enterprise-ready, scalable container based applications using commodity storage in existing server, shared storage or cloud-based storage platforms seamlessly. The company states that is keeps everything very simple with low upfront costs. In fact they claim that customers can save 8 to 10 times on storage costs using StorageOS.

StorageOS simplifies the provisioning and management of containerized storage, which they state will enable DevOps specialists to quickly test the container on a laptop or a public cloud (such as AWS) in less than 15 minutes.  There would be no need to submit a third-party request. To increase performance, both application containers and data services run on the same node. Aside from the low upfront cost and the pay-as-you-grow model, StorageOS is highly flexible being able to run on bare metal, virtual machines, native container environment and in the cloud.

StorageOS Key Features and Benefits:

  • Stateful, high-availability storage for deploying databases in containers
  • Cross-platform API support with policy-based rules to automate placement, encryption and replication
  • Integration with VMware, Docker, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, among others
  • Encrypted cloud data storage at rest and in motion
  • Block-level data replication ensures rapid recovery from hardware failures and eliminates the need for complex disaster recovery solutions or application-level replication
  • Data stays local to the node running the application for maximum throughput, lowest latency and consistent, predictable performance
  • Built-in data reduction, compression and de-duplication to reduce storage hardware costs and improve efficiency
  • Runs anywhere: on-premises, on virtual machines or in cloud instances
