IGEL made a handful of announcements this week that got lost in the tsunami of news with Microsoft Ignite and VMware Europe we were covering. IGEL announced a Linux-based IGEL OS will support Microsoft Windows Virtual Desktop customers. IGEL announced that it is working with Citrix and Ingram Micro to offer a bundle that combines best-in-breed products from the companies to simplify the delivery of high performance end user computing with “anywhere access” in the cloud. IGEL also made updated its IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS) to version 6.03.

The Linux-based IGEL OS is a cost-effective, secure solution for Windows Virtual desktop-powered cloud workspaces. This solution is ideal for organizations that are deploying Windows Virtual Desktop at scale and need to centrally manage, control and secure thousands of endpoint devices.

To help address the rapidly aging Microsoft Windows 7 endpoints, IGEL has partnered with both Citrix and Ingram Micro on a combined offering to simplify the migration of Windows desktops to Azure for the cloud workspace environment that improves security and control while lowering operational cost. This combined solution lets users take advantage of the Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) from Azure in the form of Windows Virtual Desktops (WVDs). The combined solution also includes Citrix Workspace that can really help employees get the most out of their work and increase productivity anywhere from nearly any device. Also featured is IGEL Workspace Edition software that is said to combine IGEL OS next-gen edge OS for cloud workspaces and IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS) for legendary endpoint management and control simplicity. The combined offering is available from Ingram Micro.

IGEL has updated the above-mentioned UMS to version 6.03. Along with the new version came several enhancements designed to improve the speed, security and flexibility associated with managing up to 100,000 endpoints and beyond, at scale. Some of the enhancements available with the UMS 6.03 include:

  • A new caching algorithm and a highly capable memory management system, along with some ease-of-use enhancements including the ability to copy an endpoint device’s complete system information to the clipboard with one click
  • Compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and Microsoft SQL Server Always On Availability Groups
  • Support for up to 100,000 IGEL OS-powered endpoint devices in a single cluster

Availability

The IGEL UMS 6.03.110 is available now and comes bundled with the IGEL Workspace Edition, at no additional cost.
