Today at VMworld 2019 in San Francisco, VMware Inc. announced that is has expanded its Telco and Edge Cloud portfolio. The new portfolio is stated to drive real-time intelligence for telco networks, as well as improved automation and security for telco, Edge and IoT applications. Another reasons for the new portfolio is for VMware to give communications service providers (CSPs) the ability to more efficiently deploy and monetize their 4G and 5G network investments.

The new portfolio is stated to drive real-time intelligence for telco networks, as well as improved automation and security for telco, Edge and IoT applications. Another reasons for the new portfolio is for VMware to give communications service providers (CSPs) the ability to more efficiently deploy and monetize their 4G and 5G network investments.
As 5G and 5G applications begin coming out, the main deciding factor in gaining and retaining customers is going to be service quality. Service quality becomes even more important with the increasing virtualization of radio access networks (RANs) and core networks through technologies like network functions virtualization (NFV) and the adoption of e-SIMs on mobile and IoT devices. To better provide service for customers, VMware acquired Uhana, a company that has built a real-time deep learning engine to optimize the quality of telco network experience, deployable in the operator telco cloud infrastructure, or consumed as a SaaS service. Uhana’s AI engine that optimizes mobile network subscriber experience will be folded into VMware Smart Assurance.
An issue that CSPs can run into as the they build out the 5G network architecture and Edge data centers is siloed environments from the legacy OpenStack software. VMware has launched VIO 6.0, which continues to invest in OpenStack-managed virtualized telco clouds to make them operationally deployable, container capable and multi-cloud ready. VIO 6.0 is a common platform with consistent policies for a multi-cloud environment. CSPs can leverage VIO 6.0 and VMware Smart Assurance to reduce service impact and lower expenses through an automated approach to operational intelligence.
The company introduced a new Telco Edge Reference Architecture to help with the development and deployment of an Edge-based cloud network based on VMware vCloud NFV infrastructure and VMware Integrated OpenStack. According to the company, leveraging VMware Integrated OpenStack, CSPs can manage multiple Edge sites from a single centralized data center, thereby reducing overall footprint at the Edge while optimizing network performance. The latest release of VMware Integrated OpenStack 6.0 now includes support for Kubernetes as well.
VMware has also released a new Pulse IoT Center 2.0 on-premise. This new edge deployment option is needed as the number of connected devices and IoT use cases in enterprise environments continues to increase rapidly. The new Pulse IoT Center complements the previously released SaaS version, giving customers even more flexibility.
