Build and Design Ubiquiti G6 PTZ

The Ubiquiti G6 PTZ features a solid, weather-resistant design built to withstand outdoor environments. The camera’s main enclosure is made of aluminum alloy and polycarbonate, providing a balance of durability and weight, weighing 1.1 kg (2.4 lb) with the included arm mount. Rated IP66 for weatherproofing and IK04 for tamper resistance, the G6 PTZ operates in conditions ranging from -30°C to 50°C (-22°F to 122°F). Ubiquiti includes mounting options in the box, such as wall, surface, ceiling, and pole mounts. Optional accessories are also available, including corner, pendant, in-ceiling mounts, and conduit adapters. This makes it easy to tailor installations for a wide range of environments. Both the camera and accessories are available in either black or white finishes to better match various aesthetics.

Inside, the G6 PTZ features dual 1/1.8″ 8MP image sensors paired with wide and telephoto lenses at ƒ/1.65 and ƒ/2.4, respectively. It delivers 4K video at up to 30 frames per second. The camera features a 10x hybrid zoom with a 350-degree pan and 100-degree tilt range, providing broad coverage and smooth motion tracking. Built-in IR LEDs provide 30 meters (98 feet) of night vision. The camera also supports face recognition, license plate recognition, and smart detections for people, vehicles, and animals.

Audio features include two-way audio support. Power is delivered via PoE Plus, with a maximum consumption of 24.5 watts. The camera features a MicroSD card slot for local recording and is NDAA-compliant for use in secure environments.

Management and integration are handled through UniFi Protect, which provides full support for advanced image settings, including HDR, 2D, and 3D noise reduction, as well as configurable overlays. Networking is handled via a standard 10/100 megabit RJ45 port.

Overall, the G6 PTZ offers a robust combination of mechanical and optical design, making it a natural fit for both residential and commercial surveillance environments.

Lab Testing & Protect Overview

To test the new G6 PTZ, we installed the camera in the StorageReview office podcast room. Like many of the other Ubiquiti cameras we have evaluated, the adoption process was effortless. The camera was quickly detected by our UNVR Pro and automatically updated to the latest firmware. In the UniFi Protect Devices tab, we could immediately see the G6 PTZ along with useful details such as the current firmware version, IP address, and other device information.

Under the settings tab, the G6 PTZ offers many of the familiar options seen across the UniFi camera lineup. Users can easily adjust image tuning parameters, configure night vision settings, and control features such as microphone sensitivity, noise reduction, and status indicators. The camera also includes options for enabling Color Night Vision with configurable timeouts, giving additional flexibility for low-light environments. Additionally, users can configure the Home View position, set up livestream options, and fine-tune the camera’s response when it is idle or when motion is detected.

When live viewing the camera, users have several ways to control it. For those who prefer using a keyboard, on-screen controls are available in the bottom left corner, allowing pan, tilt, zoom, access to presets, and resetting the camera to its Home View position. Mouse control can also be toggled from the top right, enabling zoom and movement through mouse input for quick manual adjustments.

Presets can be created based on the current view, making it easy to jump to key areas of interest. Additional options include setting up patrols for automated movement between presets. The G6 PTZ also supports person auto-tracking with Smart Zoom, which automatically adjusts the zoom level to maintain optimal clarity of tracked subjects.

When viewing playback footage from the G6 PTZ, events are displayed along the timeline at the bottom of the interface. The camera, like others in the G6 series, supports the full range of UniFi Protect smart detections, including person, facial recognition, vehicle, license plate, animal, and audio events. This makes it easy to locate and review relevant activity within the recorded footage quickly.

When person tracking is enabled, the G6 PTZ can actively follow and focus on a person of interest within the frame. During our testing, Kevin moved through the office, and the camera quickly locked onto him, panning smoothly from its default Home View position. During this motion, the camera also captured a facial recognition event. Once the motion exited the frame, the G6 PTZ automatically returned to its Home View position, ready for the next detection.

While testing the camera at maximum zoom, we successfully zoomed in on the StorageReview sign in the podcast room using the mechanical zoom feature, effectively showcasing the advertised 10x hybrid zoom. While additional digital zoom is available, image quality begins to degrade quickly beyond the optical range. Night vision performance in this scenario was also impressive, with the built-in IR illumination lighting the dark room and maintaining adequate image quality even at full zoom.

Final Thoughts

The Ubiquiti G6 PTZ offers a more compact and less intrusive camera design while retaining full PTZ functionality. It strikes an excellent balance between the earlier G5 PTZ and Ubiquiti’s higher-end AI PTZ, delivering many of the advanced tracking and smart detection features at a significantly lower price. At $399, it comes in just $100 more than the G5 PTZ while offering a significant step-up with 10x hybrid zoom, a dual-lens 4K design, and improved AI capabilities.

For users already invested in the UniFi Protect ecosystem or looking for additional coverage and range, the G6 PTZ stands out as a strong value. It delivers versatile performance for both residential and commercial use cases, with solid image quality, smart tracking, and smooth integration with UniFi Protect. This is an easy recommendation for anyone seeking AI-powered PTZ capabilities without the bulk or premium price of the AI PTZ.
