iXsystems Expands TrueNAS Enterprise with H-Series Platforms

by Lyle Smith

iXsystems has launched the TrueNAS Enterprise H-Series platforms, designed to give organizations ultimate performance. The H10 model is now available, while the H20 is set to launch in May 2024.

In November 2023, iXsystems unveiled the TrueNAS Enterprise F-Series, a top-of-the-line ZFS storage system designed for peak performance, featuring an all-NVMe platform. Expanding its TrueNAS Enterprise portfolio, the company has now introduced the H-Series, a new line of hybrid storage appliances.

The H-Series ships with the comprehensive TrueNAS feature set, emphasizing high availability to ensure continuous operation for critical workloads. The TrueNAS Enterprise H10 model is currently available, while the H20 is set to hit the market next month. This extension of the TrueNAS product line aims to cater to diverse enterprise storage needs by combining versatility with robust functionality.

The H-Series supports a diverse set of protocols, including file, block, and object, all managed through the respected OpenZFS filesystem. This setup ensures efficient performance and safeguards data integrity, which is essential for systems where high availability and reliability are critical. In addition, the system’s flexibility is enhanced through the capability to host applications such as MinIO, NextCloud, or Syncthing in containers directly on the devices.

Both the H10 and H20 models share a common design, housed within a 2U chassis and featuring a chassis depth of 27 inches (686 mm), along with dual controllers to ensure system redundancy. Yet, they cater to different operational needs and capacities suitable for use cases like edge deployments and main data centers.

The H10 model is equipped with DRAM ranging from 64GB to 128GB per controller, and its networking includes 4x 1G Base-T with an optional upgrade to 4x 10/25 GbE (SFP28). It supports up to 72 drives and one expansion shelf (ES24 or ES60), delivering a maximum throughput of 2GB/s. For storage, the H10 provides a hybrid capacity of 1.5PB with an effective capacity of up to 3PB, and its All-Flash storage reaches up to 1.1PB with a max effective capacity of 2.2PB.

In contrast, the H20 model extends the offerings by including DRAM that ranges from 128GB to 256GB per controller and enhances networking options with the possibility of including up to 2x 40/100 GbE (QSFP28). It can manage up to 114 drives and supports one expansion shelf capable of housing ES24, ES60, or ES102, with a maximum throughput of 5 GB/s. The H20’s hybrid storage peaks at 2.5PB with an effective capacity of 5 PB, while its All-Flash configuration supports up to 1.7 petabytes with a max effective capacity of 3.5PB.

Both models incorporate SAS SSDs for write caching, with the H20 model notably offering double the max read-cache capacity of the H10. These configurations underscore the H-Series’ scalability to meet diverse performance and budgetary requirements, making it ideal for various applications, from virtualization to file sharing and backup processes.
