# Best Desktop Workstations in 2026: Lab-Tested Leaderboard

*Updated October 20, 2026: The Dell Pro Precision 9 T2 takes Best Overall Desktop Workstation and the Dell Pro Max Tower T2 becomes Best Value Single-GPU Workstation. The dual-GPU HP Z8 Fury G6i and Dell Precision 7875 move to Best Desktops for Local AI, where they already rank, so this page now covers single-GPU and compact systems.*

**Every desktop workstation ranked on this page has been through the StorageReview lab.** We benchmark the full professional stack: SPECworkstation, SPECviewperf viewsets, Blender and V-Ray rendering, LuxMark, y-cruncher, 7-Zip, and Geekbench, and since October 2026 our scripted Windows client suite, on configurations we disclose. No system is ranked from a spec sheet, and every pick links to the review holding the data.

The field runs wider than any other category we cover: from 1-liter systems that mount behind a monitor to a Xeon tower that configured past $28,000 as tested. Class and form factor decide more than brand here, so the picks below are organized by what you can physically put on, under, or behind the desk. This page ranks single-GPU towers and compact systems on our Windows client suite. Systems with two or more GPUs, or a large shared memory pool, are ranked on our [Best Desktops for Local AI](https://www.storagereview.com/best/desktops-local-ai) page on vLLM serving under Linux.

## The Picks

### Best Overall Desktop Workstation: Dell Pro Precision 9 T2

![Dell Pro Precision 9 T2, the best overall desktop workstation in our 2026 lab testing]()

**The Pro Precision 9 T2 is the most complete single-GPU workstation we have tested.** It puts Intel’s 24-core Xeon 658X in the same 32-liter chassis as the Pro Max Tower T2 below, and we ran both towers through the same suite with both the 300W Max-Q and 600W RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell cards, so each comparison isolates one variable. The Xeon scored 12,322 in Cinebench 2026 multi-core against 8,856 for the Core Ultra 9 285K, built LLVM in 140.2 seconds against 182.5, and reached 1,638 GFLOPS in DGEMM against 768, with 3.7x the memory bandwidth from four channels of DDR5-6400 RDIMM.

E3.S support is the other reason this tower takes the top spot. The front FlexBay takes two hot-pluggable E3.S Gen5 drives, a first for a tower workstation in our lab, which opens capacities M.2 cannot reach; our two-drive RAID0 stripe trailed a single Gen5 M.2 on 4K random I/O, so buyers chasing small-block speed should run one drive. On the GPU side, the 600W card cut time to first token by 28 percent and rendered Qwen-Image 20B 33 percent faster, but it cost the Xeon 4 to 5 percent on all-core work, so the Max-Q card Dell ships is the better match for CPU-heavy buyers.

The Xeon gives back per-thread speed, trailing the 285K by 20 percent in Cinebench single-core and 21 percent in Speedometer. It listed at about $28,300 as tested on Dell.com in October, about $4,500 more than a Core T2 built the same way, and its registered ECC memory scales to 1TB.

### Best Value Single-GPU Workstation: Dell Pro Max Tower T2

![Dell Pro Max Tower T2 with a 600W RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell, the fastest single-GPU Blender result we have measured]()

**The Pro Max Tower T2 is the value route to the same GPU.** It shares the Pro Precision 9 T2’s 32-liter chassis with a Core Ultra 9 285K inside, and it takes the same RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell options, 300W Max-Q or 600W. In our original review its 600W card posted 8,025 samples per minute in Blender GPU rendering, ahead of the dual Max-Q towers we had tested at the time. On our new client suite it led the Xeon tower on lightly threaded work: 564.4 against 454.1 in Cinebench single-core, 46.3 against 36.8 in Speedometer, and faster model loads from its single Gen5 M.2.

Configured like our Xeon unit, with a 285K, 128GB of DDR5-4400 ECC, the RTX PRO 6000, a 2TB Gen5 drive, and the 1500W supply, it comes to about $23,800 on Dell.com, about $4,500 less, and the configurator starts at $1,474 (verified August 14, 2026). The trade is the Xeon’s 39 percent lead in multi-core throughput, its 3.7x memory bandwidth, and registered ECC memory with a path to 1TB. We tested this tower with a single M.2 drive, not with E3.S in the FlexBay.

### Best Mid-Range Tower: Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tower Gen 2

![Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tower Gen 2, best mid-range desktop workstation with RTX 5000 Ada]()

**At $7,939 as tested, the P3 Tower Gen 2 is the clean answer for professional workloads that do not need HEDT silicon.** The Core Ultra 9 285 with an RTX 5000 Ada delivered 30,760 in Cinebench R23 multi-core and 3,884 samples per minute in Blender GPU, and in our testing it beat Lenovo’s own Xeon-based ThinkStation PX in AI inference, GPU rendering, and single-core work. Our review framed it as bridging high-end performance and affordability, and the benchmark spread supports that.

### Best Small Form Factor: Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Ultra SFF Gen 2

![Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Ultra SFF Gen 2, best small form factor workstation]()

**A 24-core Core Ultra 9 and an RTX 4000 SFF Ada in under four liters.** The P3 Ultra SFF Gen 2 posted a Geekbench 6 multi-core of 20,334 and beat its own full-tower sibling in CPU-bound tests like Blender CPU and y-cruncher, at 4,128 dollars as tested. Its GPU ceiling is the trade: the 70W RTX 4000 SFF renders at less than half the rate of the Tower’s RTX 5000 Ada. For desk-constrained professional work, it is the best balance we have measured.

### Best Mini Workstation: HP Z2 Mini G1a

![HP Z2 Mini G1a, best mini workstation and Editor's Choice winner with Ryzen AI Max+ PRO]()

**The Z2 Mini G1a earned our Editor’s Choice award, and the numbers explain why.** AMD’s 16-core Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 395 posted 37,156 in Cinebench R23 multi-core, the strongest desktop-class CPU result in this group, from a 2.8-liter chassis with no discrete GPU at all. Its 128GB unified memory pool also earned it the Best Without a Discrete GPU spot on our [Local AI leaderboard](https://www.storagereview.com/best/desktops-local-ai), making it the rare system that leads two categories for two different reasons.

[Read the full HP Z2 Mini G1a review](https://www.storagereview.com/review/hp-z2-mini-g1a-review-running-gpt-oss-120b-without-a-discrete-gpu)

Smaller systems built on integrated graphics alone, such as the ASUS NUC 16 Pro and the Snapdragon-based ASUS Ascent QN10, are ranked on our [Best Mini PCs](https://www.storagereview.com/best/mini-pcs) leaderboard.

## Also Tested

These systems have been through the same lab process and are solid choices that did not take a category slot: the [Lenovo ThinkStation P8](https://www.storagereview.com/review/lenovo-thinkstation-p8-workstation-review) (its 112,974 Cinebench R23 multi-core remains the highest we have ever recorded in a workstation, on the prior-generation Threadripper PRO 7995WX), the [HP Z6 G5 A](https://www.storagereview.com/review/hp-z6-g5-a-workstation-review) (our top tower pick of 2023, still formidable but two GPU generations back), the [original Dell Precision 7875](https://www.storagereview.com/review/dell-precision-7875-review-96-core-threadripper-pro-and-dual-rtx-gpu-powerhouse) (the 2024 dual RTX 6000 Ada build, since superseded by the Blackwell configuration now ranked on our Local AI page).

The compact entries follow the same rule: the [ThinkStation P3 Ultra Gen 1](https://www.storagereview.com/review/lenovo-thinkstation-p3-ultra-workstation-review) ($985 base, still a strong compact value), the [ThinkStation P3 Tiny Gen 2](https://www.storagereview.com/review/lenovo-thinkstation-p3-tiny-gen-2-review-a-workstation-that-fits-anywhere) (a true 1-liter workstation that hits, per our review, a very attractive balance of size, performance, and serviceability), the [P3 Tiny Gen 1](https://www.storagereview.com/review/lenovo-thinkstation-p3-tiny-review) (from $799, the budget entry into workstation-class tiny PCs), and the [Dell Precision 3680](https://www.storagereview.com/review/dell-precision-3680-workstation-review) (our 2024 value pick at a $1,029 base; it has since left Dell’s current lineup and now sells mainly through reseller and refurbished channels, so we no longer make the value claim for it).

## Looking for Multi-GPU or GB300-Class Systems?

The HP Z8 Fury G6i and Dell Precision 7875, our former Best Overall and Best for CPU-Heavy Workloads picks, each ran two RTX PRO 6000 cards, and they now rank on our [Best Desktops for Local AI](https://www.storagereview.com/best/desktops-local-ai) page as Best Multi-GPU Platform and Best Tower for Local AI. Their SPECworkstation and rendering results remain in their reviews.

Towers with two or more GPUs are ranked on vLLM serving under Linux, and deskside AI appliances such as the NVIDIA GB300 DGX Station run DGX OS rather than Windows, so both are ranked on our [Best Desktops for Local AI](https://www.storagereview.com/best/desktops-local-ai) page, where the MSI XpertStation WS300, the first GB300 system through our lab, now holds a slot. If the concern is running a 1,300W part beside a desk, our [WS300 thermals deep dive](https://www.storagereview.com/review/msi-xpertstation-ws300-thermals-why-a-1300w-gb300-does-not-throttle-on-a-desk) answers it with an instrumented sustained run. And if one tower is not enough, our [two-Station GB300 cluster test](https://www.storagereview.com/review/dgx-station-gb300-cluster-two-towers-two-400g-dacs) measured what pairing them over 400G adds: an 11x throughput gain at matched concurrency on the largest models. The towers on this page remain the answer when the workload is Windows-first and fits on one GPU.

## How We Rank

Three rules govern every StorageReview leaderboard, and the first is that only lab-tested systems are ranked; anything we have not benchmarked can be mentioned, but it cannot hold a category. Second, systems are ranked once per measurement basis: some systems here also appear on our [Best Desktops for Local AI](https://www.storagereview.com/best/desktops-local-ai) page, ranked there by vLLM inference throughput and memory ceiling, ranked here by SPEC, rendering, and compute results, so a different question on different data sometimes produces a different winner. The line between the two pages is GPU count: single-GPU systems run our Windows client suite and rank here, while systems with two or more GPUs, or a shared memory pool of 96GB or more, run vLLM under Linux and rank on the Local AI page. Third, rankings derive from our standardized suite plus street price, with editorial judgment breaking ties inside scoring bands.

Workstation prices move constantly, so as-tested figures are labeled as review-time numbers, and any value claim on this page is checked against the vendor’s configurator on the date in the changelog above. Vendors do not see rankings before publication, and no placement is paid.

## Desktop Workstation FAQ

### What is the best desktop workstation in 2026?

The Dell Pro Precision 9 T2: Intel’s 24-core Xeon 658X with an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell, tested with both the 300W Max-Q and 600W cards, and the first tower in our lab with front E3.S drive bays. It scored 39 percent ahead of the Core-based Pro Max Tower T2 in Cinebench 2026 multi-core, with 3.7x the memory bandwidth. The Pro Max Tower T2 is the value alternative with the same GPU options and faster single-threaded response, and the Lenovo P3 Tower Gen 2 covers the mid-range. For two or more GPUs, see our [Best Desktops for Local AI](https://www.storagereview.com/best/desktops-local-ai) page.

### Do more GPUs mean faster rendering?

Not automatically, and our data makes the case: the Pro Max Tower T2’s single 600W RTX PRO 6000 rendered 8,025 samples per minute in Blender, beating dual Max-Q configurations of the same silicon in the Z8 Fury (7,351) and Precision 7875 (7,259). Density-optimized Max-Q cards trade clocks for thermals, and not every renderer scales cleanly across cards. Multi-GPU wins on capacity, memory pool, and parallel batch work; a single full-power card often wins a single job.

### Xeon or Core Ultra in a single-GPU tower?

It depends on how many threads your work uses. In the same Dell chassis with the same RTX PRO 6000, the Xeon 658X scored 39 percent higher than the Core Ultra 9 285K in Cinebench 2026 multi-core, more than doubled its DGEMM rate, and delivered 3.7x the memory bandwidth, with registered ECC memory. The Xeon trailed by 20 percent in single-core Cinebench and 21 percent in Speedometer, and the Core tower loaded models faster from its single M.2 drive. Renders, compiles, and simulations favor the Xeon; viewport, browser, and scripting work favor the Core Ultra.

### How much does a desktop workstation cost?

Treat exact figures as moving targets; these are the patterns from our review history, with as-tested prices reflecting their review dates. The tested field spans a $799-base 1-liter ThinkStation P3 Tiny (2024) to about $28,300 for the Xeon-based Pro Precision 9 T2 as configured on Dell.com in October 2026. Verified today: the Dell Pro Max Tower T2 configurator opens at $1,474 (August 14, 2026). Mid-range single-GPU builds have landed between $4,000 and $13,000 as tested, and our two RTX PRO 6000 builds of the T2 came to $23,800 and $28,300 on Dell.com, with prices trending higher across the industry.

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"FAQPage","mainEntity":[{"@type":"Question","name":"What is the best desktop workstation in 2026?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"The Dell Pro Precision 9 T2: Intel\u2019s 24-core Xeon 658X with an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell, tested with both the 300W Max-Q and 600W cards, and the first tower in our lab with front E3.S drive bays. It scored 39 percent ahead of the Core-based Pro Max Tower T2 in Cinebench 2026 multi-core, with 3.7x the memory bandwidth. The Pro Max Tower T2 is the value alternative with the same GPU options and faster single-threaded response, and the Lenovo P3 Tower Gen 2 covers the mid-range. For two or more GPUs, see our Best Desktops for Local AI page."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Do more GPUs mean faster rendering?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Not automatically, and our data makes the case: the Pro Max Tower T2's single 600W RTX PRO 6000 rendered 8,025 samples per minute in Blender, beating dual Max-Q configurations of the same silicon in the Z8 Fury (7,351) and Precision 7875 (7,259). Density-optimized Max-Q cards trade clocks for thermals, and not every renderer scales cleanly across cards. Multi-GPU wins on capacity, memory pool, and parallel batch work; a single full-power card often wins a single job."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Xeon or Core Ultra in a single-GPU tower?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"It depends on how many threads your work uses. In the same Dell chassis with the same RTX PRO 6000, the Xeon 658X scored 39 percent higher than the Core Ultra 9 285K in Cinebench 2026 multi-core, more than doubled its DGEMM rate, and delivered 3.7x the memory bandwidth, with registered ECC memory. The Xeon trailed by 20 percent in single-core Cinebench and 21 percent in Speedometer, and the Core tower loaded models faster from its single M.2 drive. Renders, compiles, and simulations favor the Xeon; viewport, browser, and scripting work favor the Core Ultra."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"How much does a desktop workstation cost?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Treat exact figures as moving targets; these are the patterns from our review history, with as-tested prices reflecting their review dates. The tested field spans a $799-base 1-liter ThinkStation P3 Tiny (2024) to about $28,300 for the Xeon-based Pro Precision 9 T2 as configured on Dell.com in October 2026. Verified today: the Dell Pro Max Tower T2 configurator opens at $1,474 (August 14, 2026). Mid-range single-GPU builds have landed between $4,000 and $13,000 as tested, and our two RTX PRO 6000 builds of the T2 came to $23,800 and $28,300 on Dell.com, with prices trending higher across the industry."}}]}
