Lexar Professional 2000x SDHC/SDXC Memory Card Review

by Lyle Smith

The Lexar Professional 2000x is the company’s latest top offering in their SD card portfolio, catering to media enthusiasts and professionals who require quick capture and transfer of both high-quality photos and 1080p full-HD, 3D, and 4K video. To achieve this high-speed performance, Lexar’s new cards leverage UHS-II technology, allowing for quoted read transfer speeds up to 300MB/s, which is double the performance of the 1000x model. For added flexibility, the cards also support UHS-I devices at UHS-I speeds, and are backwards compatible with older generation cameras and readers by performing at Class 10 speeds when being used with these non-UHS devices.

For added flexibility, the cards also support UHS-I devices at UHS-I speeds, and are backwards compatible with older generation cameras and readers by performing at Class 10 speeds when being used with these non-UHS devices.

Included with the Lexar Professional 2000x is their SD UHS-II reader, which allows users to access content on the card by simply inserting it into the reader and then plugging into a USB port. Since many computers do not have an SD card slot that supports this card natively, this is a nice inclusion to let the card run without limitation. Additionally, buyers will receive a free download of the latest version of Image Rescue software, which can recover most photos and video files if they have been lost, erased, or the card has been corrupted.

Like all Lexar card from the Professional line, the 2000x is backed by a limited lifetime warranty as well as free expert technical support. The Professional 2000x also comes in 32GB and 64GB capacities priced at roughly $60 and $100, respectively. We will be looking at the 32GB model for this review.

Design and build

The Lexar Professional 2000x looks exactly like the rest of the SD cards in the Professional line, with its black, white, and gold design. The company logo, speed, and model number are all boldly located at the top of the label sticker with the capacity and class designation (32GB, UHS-II technology (U3)) displaying within the gold part at the bottom.

On the side of the SD the card is the sliding lock mechanism, which enables the write-protect functionality to prevent accidental data loss. When flipped the card over, you will see the double-row of connector pins as well as other information including the model number and that it was made in Korea.

Performance

In this review, we will include the following comparable with its respective quoted performance numbers:

Using our HP Z620 Consumer Testing Platform, we measured transfer speeds from the Lexar Professional 2000x using the bundled USB 3.0 reader.

During our 2MB sequential test, we measured the 2000x with speeds of 259.0MB/s read and 177.3MB/s write. Though these results were the highest we have seen to date for its class and type, it did not meet its quoted 300MB/s speed in our environment. With that said, it handedly beat the SanDisk Extreme Pro in performance, which posted 180.4MB/s read and 161.4MB/s write using the SanDisk card reader.

Switching to random large-block transfers, the Lexar Professional 2000x slowed down significantly, posting 165.9MB/s read and 6.04MB/s. The SanDisk Extreme Pro posted speeds of 111.7MB/s read and 10.3MB/s write.

Conclusion

The Lexar Professional 2000x Series line is designed for professionals and media enthusiasts who require seamless capture and fast transfer rates for both high-quality photos and 1080p full-HD, 3D, and 4K videos. Available in capacities of 32GB and 64GB, the Professional 2000x cards are also packaged with a very handy USB 3.0 card reader that works very well, an added bonus that allows for the efficient transfer of files between the SD card and PC. This tiny device also removes the need for using the camera to move content to and from computers (which can impede on workflows) or purchasing a separate card reader. In addition, the new Professional line comes with a free download of the latest version of the company’s Image Rescue software, which we found very easy to use. With this tool, users can recover lost photos and videos if they have been accidentally erased and can restore files that have been corrupted.

As for how the Lexar Professional 2000x performed using the USB card reader, results were impressive. For our large-block sequential test, we measured a blistering 259.0MB/s read and 177.3MB/s while our random large-block transfers benchmark posted read and writes of 165.9MB/s and 6.04MB/s, respectively. With the exception of random writes, these numbers significantly out-performed the similarly classed SanDisk Extreme Pro and certainly prove that the Professional 2000x line is a best-of-class SD card.
