Icy Dock MB982IP-1S-1 2.5″ SAS/SATA to 3.5″ SAS Converter Review

by Mark Kidd

The MB982IP-1S-1 is part of Icy Dock’s MB982 enterprise series, which is designed for large-scale storage applications. Like the MB982IP-1S, reviewed as part of our Icy Dock SSD/HDD Conversion Kit Roundup, the MB982IP-1S-1 features a SECC steel case for cooling and durability. The MB982IP-1S-1 proves itself a versatile choice for providing a 3.5” SAS interface to use with a variety of standard backplanes and hot swap modules.

Screwless design can be just as important whether you only work with drive converters occasionally or manage a datacenter with thousands of drives. The MB982IP-1S-1 is simple to use and requires only a handful of motions to open the cover, insert a drive, and mate the drive to the interface by closing the cover. Unlike some of the other converters in the MB982 line which can only accommodate 9.5mm drives, the MB982IP-1S-1 is compatible with both 9.5mm and 15mm storage.

Video Overview

Design

The most critical aspect of a drive converter is that it snugly contains the smaller drive and, in turn, snugly fits in its host bay and against the host’s backplane. The MB982IP-1S-1 is well machined, immediately popping open by depressing the mechanical latch and cleanly mating with several 2.5” drives we placed inside. It’s all-metal construction translates into a dry weight of almost 3/4 of a pound, but you do have the sense that the MB982IP-1S-1 could handle a fall from counter height — a test we did not attempt during this review, however.

The MB982IP-1S-1 slides freely in and out of standard 3.5” drive bays, with its mount points cleanly aligned with the receiving rails and the SAS connector correctly positioned. It provides ventilation on both sides, top, and bottom, maximizing airflow options regardless of physical layout of the host device and the host’s cooling system.

Conclusion

Icy Dock’s specialities include storage enclosures and converters for a variety of applications and at a variety of price points. The MB982IP-1S-1 is clearly designed and manufactured for enterprise applications, and our testing indicates it should hold up well under the rigors of datacenter use.
