Dell Announces PowerProtect DD Series Appliances

by Michael Rink

Today, Dell Technologies announced new PowerProtect DD series appliances. This is a rather curious decision as Dell already has both a PowerProtect appliance line and a DD (Data Domain) appliance line. It would appear that Dell is attempting to merge the two product lines. The Dell EMC Data Domain DD3300 appliance is rebranded to the Dell EMC PowerProtect DD3300 effective today.

In addition to rebranding the Dell EMC Data Domain DD3300 appliance to the Dell EMC PowerProtect DD3300, DELL is also planning to release three new appliances. The Dell EMC PowerProtect DD6900, PowerProtect DD9400, and PowerProtect DD9900 are all scheduled to be released next week. The new models should provide from 1TB up to 1.25PB of usable capacity in a single rack. The appliances will come with specialized hardware inside to assist in data compression to improve the effective capacity as well. In terms of performance, Dell is claiming the new appliances will be more than a third faster and can perform up to 60,000 IOPS.

Dell Technologies is also taking this opportunity to update their related PowerProtect software, and are making the new versions public today. The new version of PowerProtect software mostly extends support, notably in the form of more integration with VMware vSphere and adding support for Dell EMC cloud disaster recovery. Dell EMC Cyber Recovery has been rebranded to Dell EMC PowerProtect Cyber Recovery now that supports PowerProtect software and the upcoming PowerProtect DD appliances.
