64G Fibre Channel Expands with Brocade X7 Director, 7850 Switch

by Harold Fritts

The future of Fibre Channel continues to be strong, highlighted by Broadcom’s announcement of a new secure, high-density Brocade Gen 7 64G Fibre Channel Directors and the Brocade 7850 Switch, the first 64G Fibre Channel switch that extends SANs over virtually any distance across the globe. The Brocade X7 Directors are available in 256- and 512-port densities.

Brocade X7 Director

These new Brocade Gen 7 Directors and 7850 Switch expand their Fibre Channel portfolio and deliver data center infrastructure security and resiliency with a cyber-resilient SAN that mitigates cybersecurity and downtime risks. The Brocade X7 is the highest-density director for storage, consolidating more device connectivity into a single fabric, reducing capital expenditures by consuming less rack space, and lowering operational costs by reducing power consumption, cooling, and management.

Integrated Autonomous Security

Brocade Gen 7 integrated autonomous security measures maintain high levels of security and resiliency quickly and efficiently. The closed network and point-to-point architecture of Fibre Channel add to the protection of connected storage devices.

The Brocade X7 Directors are purpose-built to protect and manage mission-critical data with integrated security and autonomous SAN management technologies. The 7850 switch extends that security over distance protecting data being replicated across data centers.

The Brocade Gen 7 release simplifies SAN management and operations by taking the guesswork out of protecting and managing data. Large-scale IT environments can improve operational efficiency and ensure reliable security practices and policies by decreasing the risk of human errors. The automated administrative routines and processes result mean less time spent maintaining security levels, troubleshooting, and optimizing application performance.

Brocade X7 Director: High-Density Blade for Increased Scalability

The Brocade X7 Director, with the new 64-port blade, increases the Brocade X7-8 Director capacity up to 512 x 64G ports in a 14U rack space. The Brocade X7-4 supports up to 256 x 64G ports in 8U. Large-scale enterprise infrastructures will benefit from the total system bandwidth of up to 39.6TB/s, enabling the X7 Directors to handle more modern workloads.

By utilizing 32 2x64G SFP-DD transceivers, the X7 directors enable 33 percent more device connectivity in a dense footprint that can power large-scale storage environments requiring increased capacity, throughput, and higher security, resiliency, and operational efficiency.

The use of SFP-DD gives large-scale enterprises the ability to grow without needing to continually purchase new directors. The 64-port blade enables admins to scale high-density fabrics using less hardware while reducing power demands. Utilizing the built-in traffic optimizer gives IT admins the capability to guarantee critical application performance by automatically prioritizing traffic by classifying and separating traffic with similar characteristics.

Brocade 7850 Extension Switch Delivers Cyber-resilient Replication Connectivity

The Brocade 7850 can move data faster and securely across WAN connections with continuous data protection. With replication performance of up to 100Gb/s over distance, and technology that addresses the inherent challenges of latency and packet loss over long distances, the 7850 delivers high-speed connectivity between locations, even intercontinental, to speed up replication performance.

The Brocade 7850 includes features that include pre-deployment validation to advanced network failure recovery technologies to protect data from WAN outages and disruptions. The data-in-flight security, along with Brocade’s hardware and software security features, secures connections between data centers that safeguard data from threats over the WAN and protect data from unauthorized access.

SANnav Management Portal and Global View

Brocade SANnav Management Portal and Global View give IT a simpler process to navigate the complexity of the SAN through high-level abstraction, automating processes by reducing manual and repetitive administrative tasks, and the ability to scale without affecting system performance and usability.
