AWS Announces Quantum Computing Service In Amazon Braket

by Adam Armstrong

Today at AWS re:Invent, Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), made a few announcements around new quantum computing services. This include a new service, Amazon Braket, that is said to fully managed AWS service that enables scientists, researchers, and developers to begin experimenting with computers from quantum hardware providers (including D-Wave, IonQ, and Rigetti) in a single place. The company announced the AWS Center for Quantum Computing to bring together experts to work on new quantum computing technologies. And they are launching the Amazon Quantum Solutions Lab to connect customers with experts.

The world is tackling larger and larger problems, some new, some we haven’t had the tools to tackle yet. An emerging tool is quantum computing. It has the promise of helping us solve issues such as energy storage, chemical engineering, material science, drug discovery, process optimization, and machine learning. While everything sounds great on paper, quantum computing has yet to be largely embraced for a variety of reasons. AWS is looking to speed up adoption by introducing its AWS Center for Quantum Computing. This center brings quantum experts from both Amazon and academia to work on real-world solutions. The center is more for big issues and how to handle them, versus direct links to customers. For that, AWS is introducing two other solutions.

For those that are ready to jump right into quantum computing, AWS is offers quantum technologies from various vendors, including D-Wave, IonQ, and Rigetti, through Amazon Braket. This fully managed service, lets customers start on their quantum computing journey right away by providing a single development environment to build quantum algorithms, test them on simulated quantum computers, and try them on a range of different quantum hardware architectures. Braket will have a similar experience with other AWS facets that are well known by many customers. Braket can be used to explore the possibilities of the technology or to start using it as a research tool. Amazon Braket is currently available in preview.

For those that aren’t ready to leap into leveraging quantum technology but need to know more about it, AWS also announced the Amazon Quantum Solutions Lab. Similar to the AWS Center for Quantum Computing, the lab connects experts, but instead of connecting them to each other they are connected to the customers. Customers can learn the best way to leverage the technology as it gets closer to commercial viability through a combination of hands-on educational workshops with brainstorming sessions to help customers “work backwards” from business challenges, and then go step-by-step through the process of using quantum computers effectively.
