Today Cohesity announced that it would be integrating with Pure Storage to bring faster data protection and recovery. Not only will this native integration speed up data protection performance, but users will also be able to leverage the public cloud aiding in long-term data retention and accelerating DevOps with, according to the companies, instantaneous copies of any production application.

The integration of Cohesity and Pure seems to make a lot of sense: Cohesity being a hyperconverged secondary storage and Pure being primary/mission critical storage. Customers are now able to automatically consolidate tasks from Pure to Cohesity all within the Pure operating environment. This means companies can consolidate several other services such as data protection, backup, file services, DevOps and analytics into the combined Cohesity and Pure solution.

On the data protection side of things, Pure FlashArray//M can offer more frequent snapshots and faster recovery times with no negative impact on performance. With the integration of the two companies, these snapshots can be tiered off of the Pure primary storage to the Cohesity secondary storage, or the most recent snapshots can stay on the primary storage for faster restores. Using Cohesity, admins can assign protection policies to their Pure Storage volumes to eliminate the need to manually backup the snapshots.

Additional Benefits of the combined solution include:

  • Automated management via pre- and post-snapshot scripts to put applications in an app-consistent state prior to initiating a snapshot
  • Ability to recover from Cohesity to any Pure Storage FlashArray//M in the same data center or in a separate disaster recovery site
  • Native integration with the Amazon, Google and Microsoft public clouds for low-cost retention of snapshots over the long term
  • Ability to instantaneously clone any snapshot at zero cost to a test/dev Pure Storage array to simplify provisioning of development environments
