Connected Data has announced the release of its latest 4-bay Drobo, a third generation device that is more affordable, three times faster than its predecessor and now features USB 3.0. Additionally, it is has significantly faster rebuild times as well as enhanced support for Apple’s Time Machine. Connected Data is also introducing a customer loyalty discount program, which includes $50 USD off for all first and second-generation Drobo customers in order to make the transition to a new system even more affordable.


Connected Data has announced the release of its latest 4-bay Drobo, a third generation device that is more affordable, three times faster than its predecessor and now features USB 3.0. Additionally, it is has significantly faster rebuild times as well as enhanced support for Apple’s Time Machine. Connected Data is also introducing a customer loyalty discount program, which includes $50 USD off for all first and second-generation Drobo customers in order to make the transition to a new system even more affordable.

Main features of the new Drobo include:

  • New Price, New Architecture: The new third generation Drobo has a new low price tag of $349 with a completely new architecture. Its faster rebuild times (x4) maximize data availability in the event of a disk drive failure, and the addition of battery back-up provides even more protection in case of a power outage.
  • Simple Data Protection: If a drive fails, Drobo will automatically protect data without requiring the user to intervene. Additionally, customers can can purchase the capacity they need at the time with the peace of mind of knowing they can increase storage later by adding additional disk drives, or by just swapping smaller disks with larger ones later. Drobo also protects against one or two simultaneous drive failures with just one click.
  • Investment Protection: The third generation Drobo is built upon using BeyondRAID technology, which allows first and second generation Drobo customers to seamlessly upgrade to a new Drobo by simply removing the disk pack from their current Drobo, and moving it to their new one.
  • Enhanced Time Machine Support: Drobo has an integrated feature that enables users to easily allocate a specific amount of storage capacity to be dedicated for Time Machine backups, which preserves the maximum space available for data storage. 

Pricing and Availability

The new Drobo Gen3 is priced at $349 USD. Pre-orders are now being accepted at www.drobostore.com, as well as through select channel partners. Shipments are set for late April.
