Dell Introduces New Ultra-Dense Expansion Enclosure

by Adam Armstrong

Dell Inc. has introduced a new expansion enclosure for its PowerEdge server line, the MD1280. This ultra-dense expansion enclosure offers adding up to 84 drives in a 5U form factor. The MD1280 can be expanded to two shelves, giving up to 168 drives in a 10U rack space and supports HDD with capacities up to 8TB or 1.344PB. Dell states that the MD1280 can maintain compute power while adding capacity.

The MD1280 allows companies to expand their storage in a low footprint that will turn into savings as they continue to expand their data centers. The drives can be added in to the JBOD in a modular fashion starting with 28 drives and added in 14 drives as capacity demands. The expansion enclosure comes with hot-pluggable drives, fans, EMMS, and PSUs to minimize downtime.

MD1280 specifications:

  • Drive count per chassis: Up to 84 hot-pluggable 3.5” drive bays
