EMC Announces Updates to VMAX and RecoverPoint 4.0

by storagereview

EMC has announced updates to EMC VMAX which is a new frame-based licensing model for EMC VPLEX virtual storage as well as EMC RecoverPoint 4.0, the new version of the software that now offers integration with EMC SRDF. With this announcement, EMC is asserting VMAX as the only tier 1 storage array that provides simultaneous Continuous Data Protection (CDP) and remote copies on the same LUN. Previously, users could operate SRDF and RecoverPoint on the same VMAX system, but not on the same volume. RecoverPoint 4.0 also features lots of enhancements: it is capable of protecting 7 times the data, protecting 4 times the volumes at 8000 volumes per cluster, and performs stronger with asynchronous throughput expanded 60% to over 400MB/s.

With the integration of SRDF and RecoveryPoint CDP to protect the same data on VMAX, users can replicate data to remote sites and restore applications to any point. VMware integration and reporting has also been updated to offer improvements in monitoring and intelligence. Additionally, VMAX Host I/O Limits now balances both by workload and in the case of hardware outages to properly allocate resources.

RecoveryPoint 4.0 offers administrators point-in-time recovery for critical applications inside of an EMC standard GUI. Users can select a Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and roll-back to that instance easily to steer away from the moment in time when data was corrupted or lost. This CDP means that customers can recover from operational errors and physical failures on the same data. RecoverPoint 4.0 also enables users to recover VMs to any point in time as opposed to the last recovery point, which makes it the only replication product that performs that way. With RecoverPoint 4.0, another large benefit is multi-site support which keeps data safe across remote offices with a 4:1 fan-in. With this feature, users can replicate the same volume to as many as four remote locations.

EMC is really pushing to increase midrange accessibility for their products. That’s why with RecoverPoint 4.0, EMC has included a software-only option called vRPA for their VNX arrays. With vRPA, VNX users can maintain their existing storage infrastructure while deploying vRPA for huge cost savings. Additionally, the aforementioned VPLEX frame-based licensing model for VNX can save customers up to 50% on their VPLEX investment.
