EMC Isilon Scale-Out NAS with HDFS Announced

by Lyle Smith

EMC announced the EMC Isilon scale-out NAS with HDFS, which when used with EMC Greenplum HD, it has the ability to deliver powerful data analytics on a flexible, highly-scalable, and efficient storage platform. The new enterprise-ready solution combines scale-out NAS data storage and Hadoop analytics capabilities with services, training and certification, and customer support from a single vendor, ensuring a more efficient user experience, and, as a result, eliminates CIOs’ need to spend expensive time investigating and integrating products from multiple vendors.

When growth in unstructured data in the enterprise reaches a certain point, businesses require an efficient, scalable storage system to aid them in managing this growth in addition to an effective analytics tool to extract valuable information from this data. EMC Isilon scale-out NAS with native HDFS provides Hadoop users with built-in access to a shared storage infrastructure; this bridges the gap between the innovative powers of Big Data Hadoop and mission critical enterprise IT analytics.

EMC Isilon scale-out NAS is now integrated with the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) protocol. This provides users with a solution to accelerate enterprise-wide deployment of Apache-based Hadoop. Previously, early adopters of Hadoop relied on improvised storage infrastructures that weren’t optimized for Big Data exploration, inhibiting the shared data access critical to robust analysis, and preventing wide adoption of Hadoop in the enterprise. With native HDFS, EMC Isilon removes the unnecessary integration complexities of disparate open source components and hardware, and offers a comprehensive, enterprise-ready storage solution to protect, manage, and share data in a Hadoop environment.

EMC Isilon is the industry’s first scale-out NAS storage platform that integrates native HDFS as a protocol. This provides all Hadoop users with built-in access to enterprise data protection, storage efficiency, and accelerated data movement over a wide variety of industry standard protocols (NFS, CIFS, FTP, HTTP). In addition, Isilon’s integration of HDFS eliminates the single point of failure that is inherent with traditional open-source Apache Hadoop. This integration allows customers to use their choice Apache-based Hadoop distribution as well as expand and increase their adoption of Hadoop in enterprise-wide deployments.

EMC delivers the only end-to-end Hadoop solution by offering enterprises planning, deployment, training and certification, and customer support services to aid customers in moving to Hadoop environments. Additionally, EMC Global Services Big Data Advisory Service helps customers identify business opportunities and builds a comprehensive roadmap to apply Big Data to their enterprises. To accelerate time-to-value and reduce risk, EMC services professionals can configure and integrate EMC Greenplum and EMC Isilon platforms into users’ environments themselves. EMC Data Science and Big Data Analytics "open" training and certification gives customers’ IT staff the necessary data analytics knowledge and skills with a particular focus on opportunities and challenges presented by Big Data.

EMC Greenplum HD on Isilon is now available through EMC and EMC channel partners.
