HGST Now Shipping 4TB Second-Generation MegaScale DC Cold Storage Hard Drive

by Mark Kidd

HGST has announced that it is now shipping the MegaScale DC 4000.B, a new 3.5-inch, 4TB, 6 Gb/s SATA hard drive engineered for long-term data retention and other 24/7 environments that manage infrequently accessed data with less than 180TB transferred per drive, per year. According to HGST, the 4TB MegaScale DC 4000.B requires up to 45 percent less operating power and 29 percent reduced idle power compared to typical 4TB enterprise HDDs, and 40% less power than HGST’s own 4TB Ultrastar 7K4000.

The MegaScale DC family is aimed at bulk storage, disk-to-disk backup, online archives, and other applications where value is based on cost-per-GB, watt-per-GB and GB-per-square foot rather than I/O performance. In order to address these priorities, the MegaScale DC 4000.B implements HGST’s CoolSpin technology as well as five levels of Advanced Power Management to keep power consumption and thermal loads low: normal idle, unload idle, low RPM idle, standby, and sleep. Standby and sleep modes consume less than one watt per drive. The MegaScale DC 4000.B also features a Dual Stage Actuator (DSA) and Enhanced Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS) technology for stability and reliability in rack-mount drive bays and servers.
