HGST Ultrastar 7K6000 HDDs Now Shipping

HGST has announced that their Ultrastar 7K6000 is now shipping, the company’s seventh, and last, generation air-based platform with high capacities in a standard 3.5-inch HDD design. The 6TB Ultrastar 7K6000 provides 1.2TB per disk in a five-disk solution targeting all traditional and rapidly growing scale out storage applications, including object, block and file storage architectures. The 7K6000 is designed to help data center customers capture the growth and long-term value of data by providing huge capacity, 7,200 RPM performance and the best $/GB acquisition cost available.


HGST has announced that their Ultrastar 7K6000 is now shipping, the company’s seventh, and last, generation air-based platform with high capacities in a standard 3.5-inch HDD design. The 6TB Ultrastar 7K6000 provides 1.2TB per disk in a five-disk solution targeting all traditional and rapidly growing scale out storage applications, including object, block and file storage architectures. The 7K6000 is designed to help data center customers capture the growth and long-term value of data by providing huge capacity, 7,200 RPM performance and the best $/GB acquisition cost available.

The Ultrastar 7K6000 offers 50% more capacity and 30% improved power efficiency (W/TB) than its predecessor, Ultrastar 7K4000. The Ultrastar 7K6000 also provides greater storage efficiency with its best-in-class performance, reaching up to 3X higher random write performance. This is due to HGST’s media cache architecture, which is a disk-based caching technology that provides a large non-volatile cache on the disk. Media cache also allows for improved reliability and data integrity during sudden power losses.

Other features include higher areal density for 25% faster sequential performance than the 7K4000, as well as a 128MB cache buffer. The 7K6000 also offers a 12Gb/s SAS (6Gb/s SATA) interface for easy integration into high performance data centers.
