This announcement plays up StoreServ’s flexibility in a market environment where the growth of midrange disk-based arrays has slowed while all-flash and hybrid arrays continue to gain ground. The company would like mid-market customers to see 3PAR StoreServ as a single platform that can fit into a wide range of storage architectures based on the flexibility of the array storage media and the use of “personas” based on access protocols, workloads and operating environments.

The HP 3PAR StoreServ 7440c array offers 16Gb Fibre Channel connectivity and can be configured with a maximum of 3.5 petabytes of usable capacity. The new array can be deployed with a combination of flash and HDDs and has reached 900,000 IOPs when configured as an all-flash array (AFA) in manufacturer benchmarks. The 7440c supports flat backup of snapshots to HP StoreOnce Backup which are orchestrated through HP OneView for VMware vCenter Server. 3PAR StoreServ arrays will also improve on file-oriented functionality by offering access controls, quotas, and file snapshots with end-user recovery.

The 3PAR File Persona software offers NFS, CIFS, and object access and can move workloads such as data access, protection and analytics from compute resources to the storage operating system and controller. Block, file, and object-access management can be managed by the new 3PAR StoreServ Management Console. The new 3PAR StoreServ solutions offer encryption and replication across synchronous, asynchronous, and multi-site configurations. HP’s new StoreOnce Recovery Manager Central (RMC) software provides application-managed snapshot functionality for 3PAR StoreServ systems with automatic movement of changed data to a HP StoreOnce Backup target, including StoreOnce Virtual Storage Appliances. StoreOnce RMC supports VMware vSphere in order to allow direct VM-level backup from primary storage to secondary storage.

StoreOnce
HP also expanded its software-defined storage offerings today in the form of a 50 terabyte StoreOnce virtual storage appliance, a higher capacity than previously available. The StoreOnce VSA now offers increased support for kernel-based Virtual Machines along with improved VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V integrations.

The StoreOnce Backup 6500 with Federated Catalyst solution also received updates, with new support for system-wide deduplication across eight nodes in order to streamline management and improve performance. The StoreOnce Catalyst ecosystem has expanded to include Microsoft SQL along with Symantec NetBackup AIR and Accelerator. HP 3PAR Online Import software now offers self-managed data migration from EMC VMAX systems in addition to EMC VNX and CLARIiiON CX4 systems with inline thin volume conversion.

Pricing and Availability

The HP 3PAR StoreServ 7440c Converged Flash Array is available now starting at $78,000 for two with eight 480GB eMLC solid state drives, and the 3PAR Operating System version 3.2.1. The StoreServ Management Console is available at no additional charge and will be available Dec 15. The HP 3PAR File Persona Software Suite will be available in limited geographies starting January 5, 2015 and will require 3PAR OS 3.2.1 MU2. Prices will start at $129 per usable terabyte.

HP StoreOnce Recovery Manager Central will be available worldwide starting January 23, 2015 at $1,000 for a base license which provides programmatic access for creating crash-consistent snapshots. Recovery Manager Central for VMware will be licensed at $2,500 for creating VM- and application-consistent snapshots. HP offers a 1TB StoreOnce VSA at no cost in order to allow customers to demo StoreOnce Backup and StoreOnce RMC Express Protect.

HP OneView for VMware vCenter 7.5 is a free for managing HP storage. HP Server and converged management features are licensed with HP OneView. HP OneView Advanced version 1.20 for converged management starts at $799 per licensed server.
