HP is announcing new functionality for its StoreVirtual Virtual Storage Appliance (VSA) including automated sub-LUN (Logical Unit Number) storage tiering as well as improved VMware and Microsoft integration for greater efficiency and performance. In addition to those improvements, HP has simplified management of SAP and VMware deployment by now offering software plug-ins for its HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage. Based on the HP LeftHand operating system, StoreVirtual VSA is the first scale-out software-defined storage solution to offer data tiering and Adaptive Optimization capabilities. Adaptive Optimization migrates actively-accessed data to high performance SSDs and transitions inactive data to HDDs to improve both performance and efficiency.

There are multiple licensing options for HP StoreVirtual VSA: a 4 TB license for small sites, a 10 TB standard license, and for large environments there is a 50 TB high capacity license. StoreVirtual VSA will install 3x faster than software-defined options from VMware and scales capacity up to 11 times faster. Increased integration with Microsoft’s Hyper-V Windows Server allows the provisioning of storage from Microsoft’s System Center Virtual Machine Manager for faster deployment. Also, new support for VMware’s ParaVirtualized SCSI controller will deliver efficient CPU utilization.
HP StoreFront Analytics Pack for VMware vCenter Operations Manager will show the stability, performance, and utilization of capacity for the HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage system. To manage large, complex SAP deployments, HP has integrated the 3PAR StoreServe storage and HP P9500 storage with SAP, and it also has a NetWeaver plug-in which features automation capabilities, reducing required time to clone SAP environments.
Pricing and Availability
HP StoreVirtual VSA will be available Sept. 30 in multiple capacity levels, with a 3-pack of 4 TB licenses at or below $3000. HP StoreFront Analytics Pack for VMware vCenter Operations Manager will be available later this year for $7500 for up to 10 HP 3PAR Storage systems. The SAP NetWeaver plug-in will be a free download starting Aug. 19th for customers with an existing support contract for HP storage hardware.
