Today Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) released HPE SimpliVity 4.1.0 with an eye toward enterprise edge infrastructure. The latest enhancements to this hyper-converged stack include advanced data protection thanks to StoreOnce. Now SimpliVity customers can embrace native backup to the cloud with optional or additional centralized backup for compliance. The SimpliVity update also includes CSI plugin support,  allowing customers to run cloud-native applications at the edge.

Through a confluence of events, including a worldwide pandemic, the edge has become increasingly important generating data as well as application use. Moving cloud-native applications to the edge allows for data to be processed faster, this, in turn, allows the data to be analyzed faster for insights as well. HPE is looking to aid the edge and harness the benefits through its intelligent and complete edge solution, including secure wireless and wired networking and workload-optimized infrastructure.

HPE SimpliVity 4.1.0 Updates

  • HPE SimpliVity with HPE Cloud Volumes Backup enables simple, efficient, flexible backup directly to the cloud from multiple edge sites
  • HPE SimpliVity enhanced integration with HPE StoreOnce protects distributed edge sites with automated, app-aware policies to easily and efficiently replicate apps and data directly to a centralized HPE StoreOnce appliance for compliance and long-term retention
  • Kubernetes CSI Plugin for HPE SimpliVity provides streamlined management and resilient, all-in-one hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) to run both container and virtual machine (VM) workloads on a unified platform at the edge

HPE SimpliVity Backup Updates

HPE SimpliVity already comes with several built-in data protection capabilities including remote backups across a multi-site HPE SimpliVity federation. Today HPE is introducing cloud backup and a centralized, backup store. HPE Cloud Volumes Backup is said to deliver simple, efficient, flexible backup directly to the cloud. With just three clicks, multiple edge sites can be backed up to the cloud securely. This can be automated through vCenter as well. If backups need to be restored, to one or many edge sites, they can without egress charges.

Egress fees are a big deal, the uncertainty surrounding the cost to move data is often a blocker in terms of an organization’s cloud adoption plan. In this case, HPE is going with a monthly capacity license which lets organizations plan more effectively, without being punished when it comes to having to restore data in the event of a failure. HPE is also offering customers a trial to test out the service before committing, so be sure to pester your rep to run a PoC.

HPE SimpliVity has also tightened its integration with HPE StoreOnce. This integration is said to reduce complexity, cost, and risk by protecting distributed edge sites with automated, app-aware policies to easily and efficiently replicate apps and data directly to a centralized HPE StoreOnce appliance. This is ideal for customers with strict compliance and SLAs. Other benefits of the integration are the ability to create or update edge to core backup policies in less than one minute for thousands of VMs across dozens of sites, easily backup and restore data in three simple clicks, and routinely achieve 20:1 deduplication ratio resulting in high data efficiency.

HPE is wise to further integrate its existing technologies with SimpliVity. The needs at the edge seem to be moving more quickly, but often the onsite support doesn’t march to that same beat. In fact, in a lot of cases, it may be days before someone is dispatched to service equipment upon a fault or failure. So having an easy-to-consume technology in place for data protection should go a long way to helping HPE’s customers more wisely protect these diverse edge use cases.

HPE SimpliVity CSI Plugin

We all know that containers are taking over every aspect of the IT world including the edge. This movement is further accelerated by the fact that much modern application development is done with a container-first approach when possible. With 4.1.0, HPE SimpliVity now supports the Container Storage Interface (CSI) Driver for Kubernetes to run container-based workloads at the edge.

Amongst other things, the support of CSI allows both containers and VMs to be run on the same infrastructure. This simplifies management and data protection at the edge but also ensures customers do not need a dedicated stack of gear just for Kubernetes. This should pave the way for SimpliVity customers to easily transition to modern applications without having to do much infrastructure work at the edge to get there.

Availability

The HPE SimpliVity 4.1.0 is now available worldwide at no additional charge for HPE SimpliVity customers with valid support contracts. All new features and capabilities announced are supported with VMware vSphere 7.0.
