Marvell Unveils NVMe-oF & EDSFF Solutions At FMS 2018

by Adam Armstrong

Today at the Flash Memory Summit in Santa Clara, Marvell unveiled a new NVMe over fabrics (NVMe-oF) SSD converter controller, the 88SN2400. The company also revealed its new EDSFF reference design. These new technologies as well as others form Marvell, will be demonstrated at their booth (511) at Santa Clara Convention Center, August 7-9.

An industry first, the 88SN2400 is an SSD converter controller that con convert NVMe SSDs into NVMe-oF SSDs. This can expose the entire bandwidth of the SSD to the network, through low latency fabric, and give users a lower TCO. The 88SN2400 delivers scalable, high-performance disaggregation of storage from compute by utilizing a low power Ethernet fabric versus PCIe fabric. An enterprise-class server SoC manages the new controller with integrated 100GE controllers.

For companies looking to leverage low-latency and high-performance Ethernet Bunch of Flash (EBOF) storage appliances, the new controller is an ideal fit. The 88SN2400 is quoted as supporting up to 18 million IOPS and up to a 150GB/s pipe of pooled storage, and better power consumption per IO compared to general purpose architectures. Marvell states that the controller can be attached to existing backplanes.

As far as SSDs go, the new ruler or EDSFF form factor holds a lot of potential for both capacity and cooling. Marvell has revealed its reference design for an EDSFF that leverages either a pair of 8-channel 88SS1088 SSD controllers or alternatively, a pair of 8-channel 88SS1098 controllers. The controllers can deliver up to 32TB of capacity and are suitable for use with most NAND memory vendors.
