NEC has updated HYDRAstor OpenStorage for Symantec NetBackup, with Optimized Synthetics technology that allows clients to replace full backups with incremental ones. Symantec is providing an API for partners to integrate with NetBackup as part of the "Better Backup for All" program, and NEC is using this integration to leverage HYDRAstor’s processing power and integrated functionality to synthesize full system backups with reduced time and network traffic.
NEC has updated HYDRAstor OpenStorage for Symantec NetBackup, with Optimized Synthetics technology that allows clients to replace full backups with incremental ones. NEC cites surveys by SNIA and Contoural indicating that 80% of files are dormant and that file shares are growing 40% annually. These results suggest enterprise clients could cut costs by improving data storage and backup architectures.
HYDRAstor OpenStorage
HYDRAstor is NEC’s distributed grid storage platform, built to support long-term data retention and modular scalability. In addition to Optimized Synthetics, the HYDRAstor OpenStorage Suite consists of the following components for backup and replication:
- Express I/O accelerates throughput with a lightweight transfer protocol.
- Dynamic I/O provides front-end I/O load balancing across Accelerator Nodes.
- Optimized Copy features WAN-optimized backup image copy services for remote systems.
HYDRAstor manages storage through a “community” of Smart Nodes, which can be a heterogeneous collection of standard servers. HYDRAstor’s grid model facilitates online upgrades and expansions for in-place technology refreshes. This flexible grid allows a heterogeneous data storage ecosystem to benefit from enterprise features including:
- Distributed two-tier architecture
- Independent linear scalability of performance and capacity
- Distributed Hash Table to route data to the correct node
- DRD protection: Erasure-coded data resiliency
- DataRedux: Inline application-aware global data deduplication and compression
- Cloning/Snapshot: Instant deduplicated file system or file R/W copy

HYDRAstor Optimized Synthetics is available immediately as an independent feature or as part of the OpenStorage Suite for Symantec NetBackup.
