New Dell Hardware and Software Offerings Broaden the Dell Fluid Data Architecture

Dell today announced enhancements throughout the company’s Fluid Data storage portfolio. New and updated products include Dell’s Compellent Storage Center 6.3 with end-to-end 16Gb Fibre Channel, PowerVault MD3 array software, and a new Dell PowerVault DL4000 1U backup appliance.


Dell today announced enhancements throughout the company’s Fluid Data storage portfolio. New and updated products include Dell’s Compellent Storage Center 6.3 with end-to-end 16Gb Fibre Channel, PowerVault MD3 array software, and a new Dell PowerVault DL4000 1U backup appliance.

Dell Compellent Storage Center

Dell Compellent Storage Center 6.3 improves Compellent array scalability and performance. According to Dell, Compellent SC8000 controllers with pre-release Storage Center code version 6.3.1 see increased performance up to 100 percent over previous versions when running OLTP workloads using IOmeter with a 100% random 70/30 read/write mix and 4K sector transfer sizes. Expected to be generally available in the second quarter of 2013, Compellent 6.3 is the first storage solution to announce end-to-end 16Gb Fibre Channel capabilities, .

Additional Storage Center 6.3 enhancements announced today include:

  • Synchronous replication enhancements
  • Improved Windows Server 2012 support
  • Streamlined Active Directory and LDAP support
  • Improved federal government security with USGv6/IPv6 support
  • Intelligent alerts and volume placement recommendations based on performance and capacity monitoring.

PowerVault MD3

PowerVault MD3 software enhancements include dynamic disk pools that simplify disk management and improve rebuild performance, as well as new IP-based remote asynchronous replication to protect against site failures. PowerVault MD3 now supports VMware vStorage APIs for Array Integration (VAAI) to offload storage tasks from the server to PowerVault arrays, and offers new automatic allocation of storage for thin provisioning.

Dell PowerVault DL4000

Optimized for small to medium enterprises and remote offices, the DL4000 provides backup and disaster recovery for applications and data, with integrated of software and system management. The PowerVault DL4000 provides 5.5 terabytes of internal storage capacity in a 1U turnkey appliance with snapshot, replication, de-duplication and compression features. DL4000 users can host two virtual standby machines that protect critical applications for up to two servers for quick disaster recovery.

Quest NetVault Backup 9.0

Updated Quest software integrates with NetVault Extended Architecture (NetVault XA), featuring a new GUI and shared services to simplify management of multiple Quest data protection technologies in physical and virtual heterogeneous environments. NetVault’s cross-platform capabilities now include Windows Server 2012 and Novell Open Enterprise Server 11, and enhanced support for Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V and VMware vSphere. New native replication for the NetVault SmartDisk deduplication solution streamlines offsite data storage and disaster recovery.

Dell PowerVault DL2300

PowerVault DL2300 is a new enterprise-class data protection appliance matching PowerEdge servers with CommVault Simpana 9 software to power data backup, recovery, replication, archiving and de-duplication for physical and virtual servers.

Availability

Dell PowerVault MD3 software enhancements and PowerVault DL2300 are now available, and Dell’s Quest NetVault Backup 9.0 is expected in December 2012. PowerVault DL4000 has planned availability in Q1 2013, while Compellent Storage Center 6.3 will enter beta in early 2013 and with general availability planned for Q2 2013.
