This week’s News Bits we look at a number of small announcements, small in terms of the content not the impact they have. Hedvig raises an additional $21.5 million in series C Funding. Cisco and Docker announced a partnership to automate containers for UCS. According to a recent IDC report, Toshiba was the fastest growing HDD and SSD vendor in 2016. Hitachi Content Platform has generated over $1 billion in revenue. Scality was named an Oracle PartnerNetwork Platinum Level partner. Cavium and Microsoft have partnered to enable a variety of cloud workloads running on ThunderX2 ARMv8-A Data Center processor for the Azure cloud platform. Dell EMC shipped over an Exabyte of all-flash in 2016. Commvault partnered with Pure to bring its Data Platform to FlashStack.

Hedvig Raises An Additional $21.5 Million In Series C Funding

Hedvig announced that it has raised an additional $21.5 million in series C funding bringing its funding total up to $52 million. This go round, Hedvig had some new investors in Singapore-based EDBI and Hewlett Packard Pathfinder. Hedvig states that it will take its new funding to expand into new markets, develop end-to-end cloud and backup solutions for large enterprises and grow its world-class engineering, sales, and channel teams.

Cisco & Docker Announce Partnership To Automate Containers For UCS

Cisco and Docker have announced a worldwide strategic alliance to deliver containers to application-centric data center and cloud infrastructure. The alliance enables Docker Enterprise Edition with Docker Datacenter across Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) and Cisco validated Converged Infrastructure solutions with Cisco partners.

Benefits include:

  • Reduced complexity for improved manageability and automation, leveraging the unified, highly scalable architecture of Cisco UCS, with consistent management across all computing environments — traditional and modern. Cisco UCS is ideal for distributed, microservices application architectures with high performance networking and comprehensive infrastructure controls via application programming interfaces.
  • Scalable, resilient, secure networking for containerized applications using Contiv, a Cisco-initiated open source project that allows IT organizations to implement comprehensive network policy enforcement.

Toshiba Was The Fastest Growing Vendor Of HDD & SSD

Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. announced that (according to IDC) it was the fastest growing vendor of both HDDs and SSDs. Toshiba saw worldwide sales of HDDs take a market share of 24% in 2016 (the only HDD vendor to see growth in 2016). Toshiba is also reporting an SSD revenue of 114% year over year for 2016.

Hitachi Content Platform Generates Over $1 Billion In Revenue

Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) announced that its Hitachi Content Platform (HCP) portfolio has generated $1 billion in revenue. The boon in revenue is credited to adding new customers and to HCP’s evolving use cases. Some of the new customers added by HCP are ThinkOn, Spinmaster, and Accident Exchange.

Scality Named An Oracle PartnerNetwork Platinum Level Partner

Scality had been named as an Oracle PartnerNetwork Platinum Level partner. With its Platinum status, Scality will receive the high level of engagement, commitment, and resources available to OPN partners. This is especially good news for Oracle customers looking for the backup and archive solutions Scality can provide.

Cavium & Microsoft Partner To Accelerate Azure with ThunderX2

Cavium is working with Mircrosoft to enable a variety of cloud workloads running on ThunderX2 ARMv8-A Data Center processor for the Microsoft Azure cloud platform. The Cavium ThunderX2 family is a second-generation 64-bit ARMv8-A server processor SoCs for Data Center, Cloud and High Performance Computing applications. The platform has been designed in collaboration with a leading server ODM supplier for Microsoft.

Dell EMC Shipped Over An Exabyte Of Flash In 2016

Dell EMC declared 2016 the year of all-flash. Making good on this declaration, the compay shipped over an Exabyte of flash (array capacity) over the year. From a revenue perspective, Dell EMC’s revenue growth for flash was 72.1% versus the 61.2% growth for the overall all-flash storage market. What helped Dell EMC hit this massive amount of flash shipped includes the company’s VMAX All Flash, XtremIO, and Unity All Flash.

Commvault & Pure Storage Parnter To Bring Data Platform To FlashStack

Commvault announced that it would integrate its Data Platform and IntelliSnap technology with Pure Storage’s FlashStack (a joint solution between Pure and Cisco). FlashStack is a flexible, converged infrastructure solution​. Adding data protection technology like Commvault’s Data Platform and IntelliSnap to a converged infrastructure like FlashStack address data protection as more companies shift away from traditional hardware to converged and hyperconverged solutions.
