2020 was a bad year for many reasons. The Covid-19 pandemic forced an unprecedented number of workers to work remotely. While this cut down on the commute, it introduced a few problems. One of the issues is hundreds of people connecting remotely leaving and potentially leaving themselves and their end devices open to attack. Companies are struggling to prevent these ransomware attacks as they no longer can rely on a single action or tool for protection. Nutanix is looking to address this through its cloud platform.

One of the new protections against ransomware is using machine learning to detect anomalies. This is done through IP reputation services that are part of Flow Security Central in Nutanix Flow, a security and networking operations and monitoring solution. Now Flow Security Central can monitor networks for anomalies, malicious behavior, as well as common network attacks stopping them before they reach the application and data layers. Flow Security Central can also monitor endpoints to help protect VDI deployments that seem to be the main target for initial ransomware infection and spread.

That covers the endpoints, but what about the application layer. Inside Nutanix Files, there is a native ransomware detection for file storage services. File analytics detects abnormal and suspicious access patterns and identifies known ransomware signatures to block data access in real-time. It goes on to identify file shares where replication and snapshots have not been configured appropriately and alerts IT administrators to this potential risk. Ransomware works best when the perpetrators can stop recovery attempts. Nutanix Files fights this through immutable snapshots that prevent tampering and deletion. Nutanix Files also has native snapshot capabilities for faster recovery.

Nutanix Objects also got an upgrade with the ability to now to configure Write Once Read Many (WORM) policies for individual files and objects selected by an IT team to help guard against unauthorized deletion or encryption of data. The best part of the WORM protections is that they can be automated, further cutting down on issues. To better secure multi-tenants environments, Nutanix Objects provides data access permissions at a granular bucket level.
