Nutanix Plans To Deliver Invisible Infrastructure With Xtreme Computing Platform

by Adam Armstrong

Today at the .NEXT conference, Nutanix unveiled its Xtreme Computing Platform (XCP) that Nutanix said will deliver what it is calling invisible infrastructure. XCP is comprised of two different product families, Nutanix Acropolis and Nutanix Prism. These two product families allow XCP to extend hyper-converged solutions that enable application independence from infrastructure with an advanced app mobility feature, native virtualization, and consumer-grade search capability. Nutanix states that its new innovations will simplify datacenters while reducing costs and enhances IT service delivery.

Nutanix describes the notion of “invisible infrastructure” as technologies no one thinks too much about. Technologies that work and scale when needed and self heal. Basically Nutanix wants to deliver infrastructure that is more like the cloud in its scalability, resiliency, agility, and flexibility but with lower costs, better application service levels, and trusted security. Nutanix states its next-generation invisible infrastructure will replace traditional storage and virtualized infrastructure that is says is too expensive, too difficult to manage and deploy, too difficult to scale, and too difficult to migrate from.

Nutanix new XCP is made up to two different product families:

Nutanix Acropolis builds off of Nutanix flagship hyperconverged product incorporating an innovative open platform for virtualization and application mobility. Acropolis allows IT to choose the applications that best fit their organizations needs. Infrastructure decisions are made based off of application performance and scalability as well as economic considerations. Acropolis is made up of three components: Distributed Storage Fabric (enabling common web-scale services across multiple storage protocols), App Mobility Fabric (delivers powerful VM placement, VM migration, and VM conversion,    as well as cross-hypervisor high availability and integrated disaster recovery), and Acropolis hypervisor (a native hypervisor based off of Linux KVM).

Nutanix Prism delivers one-click technology to streamline tasks such as software upgrades, insight for detailed capacity trend analysis and planning, and troubleshooting.

Benefits include:

  • Convergence of storage, compute and virtualization resources into a unified system to provide an end-to-end view of all workflows – something difficult to achieve with legacy three-tier architectures;
  • Advanced machine learning technology with built-in heuristics and business intelligence to easily and quickly mine large volumes of system data and generate actionable insights for enhancing all aspects of infrastructure performance; and
  • True consumer-grade user experience with sophisticated search technology that makes management tasks elegantly simple and intuitive, with no need for specialized training.
