PMC-Sierra has announced that its 12Gb/s Adaptec SAS adapter technology will be available for external storage expansion throughout Lenovo's ThinkServer offerings. The Lenovo 8885E is a PCIe HBA that leverages PMC's Adaptec technologies to provide expansion opportunities Lenovo’s rack and tower servers. The 8885E card provides eight SAS/SATA ports for 6Gb/s and 12Gb/s JBOD connectivity in a MD2 form factor.

The Lenovo 8885E card enables administrators to pair ThinkServers with Lenovo JBODs, and it supports common operating systems including Windows, RHEL, SLES, and VMware. PMC Adaptec Series 8 adapters are built around the PM8063 RAID-on-Chip controller, which interfaces with an eight-lane PCIe 3.0 interface and with inline XOR to requirements for DDR3 access to improve performance.

The current generation of PMC host bus adapters has been in part the result of continued changes and competition in the enterprise HBA market. This announcement comes a year after the availability of PMC’s Adaptec Series 8 host bus adapters. The Adaptec Series 8 was benchmarked by StorageReview earlier this year. According to PMC, that year has been one of double-digit revenue growth for its storage solutions and particularly a year of expansion for the company’s hyperscale data center sales.
