Samsung has announced the AutoCache v3.0, the company’s first enterprise-class caching software solution. As a collaborative effort with VMware, Samsung indicates that the caching software is set to be one of the first caching solutions used with the new VMware vSphere APIs for IO Filtering, which fully supports write-back caching in virtualized environments. Samsung acquired Proximal Data, and AutoCache along with it, back in November of last year.

As a collaborative effort with VMware, Samsung indicates that the caching software is set to be one of the first caching solutions used with the new VMware vSphere APIs for IO Filtering, which fully supports write-back caching in virtualized environments. AutoCache v3.0 helps to alleviate I/O bottlenecks that are caused through disk drives used in data centers by transparently moving copies of hot data to SSDs so that it can be accessed much faster. In addition, the software uses write-back caching, which enables data to be first written on SSDs and then copied to disk drives. As a result, systems will be able to handle bursts of high-write requests at SSD speeds instead of disk speeds. The technology is also compatible with all types of SSDs including NVMe, SATA or SAS drives.
Samsung also claims that AutoCache v3.0 increases disk I/O performance in each VM up to 400 percent or more due to eliminating the traditional I/O bottlenecks in virtual environments associated with multiple Virtual Machines accessing the storage resources. AutoCache v3.0 can also be used to augment a range of different workloads and databases including Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), real-time big data analytics, data warehousing, business intelligence applications, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), public and private cloud environments and general virtualized workloads.
AutoCache v3.0 is optimized for use with Samsung SSDs, while featuring DRAM caching, which allows caching to DRAM and solid state storage within the same server. Its SSD clustering feature also offers users a caching device at each node, each of which can support a maximum of eight SSDs in a single server. In addition, it is equipped with adaptive caching that analyzes I/O patterns to determine which I/Os will benefit from caching and automatically cache only those. Its role-based administration also offers admins quite a bit of flexibility, as it allows IT managers to set individual access and permission policies to their IT staff.
