Samsung Mass Produces Its 256GB eUFS

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced that it has began mass production of its 256GB embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS) solution. This is a capacity bump from the eUFS it was producing last year. This is the first eUFS to be based on the new automotive specifications from the JEDEC UFS 3.0 standard.

Automated cars, or Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), are right around the corner and many companies are making big strides in that direction, Tesla probably being the most notable. On top of this, the infotainment systems for higher end and middle end cars now demand more storage with high performance. The new eUFS not only provides 256GB or capacity, Samsung states that it can hit read speeds of 850MB/s and random performance of 45K IOPS.

With automotive memory applications a crucial factor is thermal management. If they eUFS can’t stand too much heat, they won’t be selling too many in Phoenix, Arizona. Samsung’s latest 256GB eUFS is rated for temperatures -40°C and 105°C for both operational and power saving modes, versus the usual -25°C to 85°C for vehicles in operation and -40°C to 85°C when in idle or power saving mode. On top of this, the application processor can lower its clock speed in the case where temperature exceeds 105°C.

Samsung intends to strengthen its partnerships with global automakers and component providers.
