Samsung Electronics has announced the Optical Smart Hub SE-208BW optical disc drive (ODD) for backing up and accessing all types of media and data files. The Optical Smart Hub is accessible through tablets, smartphones (download the app via iTunes Store and Android Market), and Smart TVs and up to four devices can access simultaneously via WiFi. By acting as a personal cloud, it also helps extend storage on devices. In addition, the Optical SMART Hub allows users to write CDs and DVDs without using a computer.

The Optical Smart Hub also functions as a wireless router when connected to an Ethernet port. TVs with DLNA compatibility can take advantage of the SE-208BW DLNA apps, such as Allshare, which allows users to view drive content through their TV. The SE-208BW also provides a connection between mobile devices and TV or PC, in addition to a triangular connection among TVs, PCs and mobile devices.
The external drive supports a variety of formats including: 24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-RW, 8X DVD reading and 8X DVD±R, 5X DVD-RAM, 6X DVD+R Dual Layer, 6X DVD-R Dual Layer, 8X DVD+RW, 6X DVD-RW recording.
An Android app for the Optical SMART Media Hub is currently available and the iPhone version will be released shortly. Samsung also has plans for a Kindle app and Smart TV app.
The Optical SMART Hub SE-208BW optical disk drive will be available some time in first quarter of 2012 and will retail for MSRP $129.99.
