If you’re looking for much else in the way of specs, you’ll have to wait until the drive is closer to shipping. Samsung is not disclosing any of the performance data or drive configuration details. The Samsung PM830, which is designed for OEM duties, offers 500MB/s reads and 350MB/s writes. It may be fair to assume the consumer-focused SSD 830 will be in the same ballpark.

Like the prior generation SSD 470, the SSD 830 sure looks good. The drives come in a brushed metal casing with black tones. It’s a bit odd to get excited about an SSD case that will spend most of its live never seen, but Samsung does own the best retail package design for their SSDs.

For managing the drive, Samsung includes their Magician software for monitoring total writes and performing duties such as securely erasing the SSD. A bracket for mounting the drive in a 3.5" bay, cables and a free copy of Norton Ghost, for easy migration are also provided with the new SSD. Notebook upgrade kits will feature a USB to SATA adapter cable to handle easy data transfers.

Availability

The Samsung SSD 830 series will be available this October in capacities of 64, 128, 256 and 512GB; pricing has not been announced.
