Seagate Technology has announced a new backup device, the Seagate EVault Backup Target Appliance (BTA). The Seagate BTA is part of the company's EVault Backup and Recovery Appliances that are aimed at data centers requiring up to 100TB of usable capacity.

The Seagate BTA is an all-in-one appliance that is aimed at large enterprise companies and service providers. The BTA is a solution for multiple operating systems and applications, including Oracle databases. Seagate acquired Xyratex in December of 2013 and have built the BTA based off of the Xyratex OneStor AP-2424 chassis. The BTA is a 4U device with 24 bays, using 6TB Seagate HDDs in all 24 bays gives users 144TB of raw storage. The BTA offers data deduplication and compression. And according to Seagate, the BTA "stands alone as the only backup target appliance that enables backup to a private, public or partner cloud and features 65 TB of usable storage capacity."

The Seagate BTA is based off of Seagate's hybrid cloud model (supporting environments where both private and public cloud storage is used). The BTA is designed to give database administrators more control and flexibility to deploy backups by utilizing any enterprise application's backup software. The BTA can deploy backup and recovery storage vaults wherever they are needed, including DeltaPro backups, enterprise components, and granular restore.

Unfortunately the BTA doesn't allow for scaling up or out today, but given Seagate's enthusiasm for this new space, it's reasonable to expect them to continue to create vertically-integrated storage solutions and product enhancements going forward based on customer feedback.

Availability and pricing

The Seagate BTA is available now in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the European Union, and is planned to be available in other regions in May of 2015. The BTA has a list price of $76,995 USD.
