Today Synology Inc. announced that it was launching new RackStations and expansion units. The new RackStations are the RS18017xs+ and RS4017xs+ and the new expansion units are RX2417sas and RX1217sas. The upgrade centers around delivering more processing power and higher scalability.

Today Synology Inc. announced that it was launching new RackStations and expansion units. The new RackStations are the RS18017xs+ and RS4017xs+ and the new expansion units are RX2417sas and RX1217sas. The upgrade centers around delivering more processing power and higher scalability.

The RS18017xs+ uses its hardware (Intel Xeon D-1531 six-core 2.2GHz processor—burst up to 2.7GHz—with up to 128GB of DDR4 ECC RDIMM memory) to power its performance. Synology is quoting the performance at more than 4,800MB/s sequential read throughput and sequential read IOPS of 568K (with 6 x 10GbE Link Aggregation enabled). The RS18017xs+ is a 2U rackmount NAS with 12 bays that support both 3.5” and 2.5” SAS or SATA drives. With the RX1217sas expansion unit the new NAS can scale up to 96 drives and with the RX2417sas it can scale up to 180 drives. On the networking side of things, the RS18017xs+ has two 10GBase-T and four 1GbE ports, with optional 10GbE Network Interface Cards (NIC) support.

Synology RS18017xs+ key specifications:

  • CPU: Intel Xeon D-1531
  • Memory: 16GB DDR4 ECC RDIMM
  • Max memory: 128GB
  • Drives
    • Hot-swappable
    • Bays: 12
    • Max drives with expansion:
      • RX1217sas: 96
      • RX2417sas: 180
  • Max capacity
    • Internal Raw: 120TB
    • With Expansion: 1.8PB
  • External ports:
    • USB 3.0 x 2
    • Expansion port x1
    • RJ-45 1GbE LAN Port x 4
    • RJ-45 10GbE LAN Port x 2
    • PCIe Slot for Network Card

The RS4017xs+ uses an Intel Xeon D-1541 8-core 2.1GHz processor (burst up to 2.7GHz) and up to 64GB of DDR4 ECC UDIMM memory. From the performance side of things, Synology is stated it can hit 4,900MB/s in sequential read throughput and 690K sequential read IOPS (again using 6 x 10GbE Link Aggregation). A first for Synology, the RS4017xs+ is a 3U form factor. The new NAS has 16 bays that support 3.5” SATA drives and can be combined with two Synology RX1217/RX1217RP expansion units to bump the total capacity up to 40 drives.

Synology RS4017xs+ key specifications:

  • CPU: Intel Xeon D-1541
  • Memory: 8GB DDR4 ECC RDIMM
  • Max memory: 64GB
  • Drives
    • Hot-swappable
    • Bays: 16
    • Max drives with expansion: 40
  • Max capacity
    • Internal Raw: 160TB
    • With Expansion: 400TB
  • External ports:
    • USB 3.0 x 2
    • Expansion port x 2
    • RJ-45 1GbE LAN Port x 4
    • RJ-45 10GbE LAN Port x 2
    • PCIe Slot for Network Card

Both new RackStations will be running the award winning DSM OS and support Synology High Availability. Another element of high availability that both the new NAS share is their built in redundancy mechanisms such as fans, PSUs, and network failover support. And the new NAS devices provide seamless storage solutions for virtualization environments including VMware, Citrix, Hyper-V, and OpenStack.
