Toshiba XG6 96-layer 3D TLC Client SSD Announced

by Lyle Smith

Toshiba has announced the XG6, the market’s first SSD built on 96-layer 3D TLC BiCS FLASH memory. The XG6 fits right in the middle of Toshiba’s client portfolio as their newest mainstream NVMe entry, replacing the impressive XG5, targeted towards client PCs, high-performance mobile device, gaming segments and embedded use cases. The XG6 is also ideal for data center environments as boot drives in servers, caching and logging, in-situ processing and commodity storage. Toshiba indicates their new SSD boasts an increase of roughly 40% per unit chip size compared to the 64-later 3D flash memory.

Toshiba has announced the XG6, the market’s first SSD built on 96-layer 3D TLC BiCS FLASH memory. The XG6 fits right in the middle of Toshiba’s client portfolio as their newest mainstream NVMe entry, replacing the impressive XG5, a drive we found very impressive, targeted towards client PCs, high-performance mobile device, gaming segments and embedded use cases. The XG6 is also ideal for data center environments as boot drives in servers, caching and logging, in-situ processing and commodity storage. Toshiba indicates their new SSD boasts an increase of roughly 40% per unit chip size compared to the 64-later 3D flash memory.

Even though it uses the compact M.2 22×80 form factor, the XG6 packs some bar-setting performance. In sequential reads and writes, it is quoted to deliver up to 3,180MB/s and 2,960 MB/s, respectively, while random reads and writes are expected to hit upwards of 355,000 IOPS and 365,000 IOPS, respectively. The power performance-to-power ratio is also evident in this release, with 4.5 W and 5.7 W in active reads and writes.
