Today Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) and VMware Inc. announced that they would be expanding capabilities as well as availability. VMware Cloud will no be available from the U.S. West (Oregon) region to also include the AWS U.S. East (N. Virginia) region. The new capabilities include VMware Site Recovery, a robust disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS).

As we’ve previously stated, VMware Cloud on AWS allows customers to use VMware tools that they already know to continue managing their applications while leveraging several of the benefits of AWS including compute, databases, analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), security, mobile, deployment, application services, and more. VMware customers looking to migrate to the public cloud, need look no farther than VMware Cloud on AWS. Not only does it support the ability to develop entirely new applications, extend the capacity of data centers for existing applications, or quickly provision development and test environments, it also supports containerized workloads and DevOps services. Now even more regions will be able to take advantage of these benefits.

VMware’s new DRaaS, Site Recovery, is designed to protect workloads between on-premises datacenters and VMware Cloud on AWS, as well as between different instances of VMware Cloud on AWS. This new service can help reduce costs by eliminating the need for a secondary disaster recovery site. The service is designed to be simple to deploy and manage and has simple one-click failover.

Benefits of VMware Site Recovery include:

  • Accelerate time-to-protection: Remove the need to build a secondary DR site and implement DR in a day with familiar tools and the same operating environment from on-premises to the public cloud
  • Simplify DR operations: Streamline operations with automated failover and failback and simplify ongoing maintenance and non-disruptive testing
  • Apply Cloud Economics: Reduce secondary site management costs with cloud-managed infrastructure and only pay for what you use with granular, on-demand cloud pricing

Availability and Pricing

VMware is now offering one-year and three-year subscription options for VMware Cloud on AWS. VMware Site Recovery is available today as a separate add-on and is priced per protected VM with hourly metering.
