WD Announces WD Se HDDs

by storagereview

WD is announcing the availability of its new enterprise-class WD Se hard drives that range in capacities up to 4TB and are designed for scale-out datacenter deployments. The drives provide robust storage for large-scale replicated environments, mid-sized NAS deployment and backup and archiving. Being implemented in data centers that are seeing immense growth, the drives are affordable, but they also offer the features required for data security by organizations. On top of that, with the SMB to mid-range NAS market growing, the WD Se can also support high-workload applications experienced in those environments.

Being implemented in data centers that are seeing immense growth, the drives are affordable, but they also offer the features required for data security by organizations. On top of that, with the SMB to mid-range NAS market growing, the WD Se can also support high-workload applications experienced in those environments.

WD Se Features:

  • A dual processor for twice the processing power to maximize performance
  • Enhanced Rotary Acceleration Feed Forward (RAFF) to monitor the drive and correct both linear and rotational vibration in real time
  • Dual actuator technology improves head positional accuracy over the data track(s)
  • StableTrac whereby the motor shaft is secured at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking during read and write operations delivering a consistent level of performance for applications
  • Multi-axis shock sensor automatically detects the subtlest shock events and compensates to protect the data
  • RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery prevents drive fallout caused by extended HDD error-recovery processes common to desktop drives
  • Dynamic fly height technology; each read-write head’s fly height is adjusted in real time for optimum reliability.

WD Se hard drives are a complement to the WD Red hard drives which are designed for smaller NAS systems. WD Se drives focus on table-top NAS units around 6 bays as well as rack-mount NAS solutions with up to 24 bays. WD also offers the WD Xe and WD Re drives to provide a complete line of WD datacenter drives.

Pricing and Availability

The WD Se hard drives are currently shipping in 2TB, 3TB and 4TB capacities and are available through select distributors and resellers. MSRP ranges from $159.99-$309.99 which includes a five-year limited warranty.
