G6 Dome vs. G5 Dome Ultra

We previously reviewed the G5 Dome Ultra, which served as a compact, low-profile, low-cost option for indoor deployments. The G6 Dome builds on that foundation with higher resolution and broader coverage while also being designed for more versatile placement.

The table below highlights the core differences in image quality and price.

Specification G6 Dome G5 Dome Ultra
Resolution & Sensor 4K 8MP (1/1.8″) 2K 4MP (1/2.4″)
Field of View D: 134.1° H: 109.9° V: 56.7° D: 120.6° H: 102.4° V: 54.9°
Intended Use Indoor/Outdoor Indoor only
Tamper Resistance IK10 IK06
Price $279 $129

The G6 Dome offers advancements in resolution, durability, and flexibility, making it a superior choice. In contrast, the G5 Dome Ultra remains a strong value option for dedicated indoor coverage.

Build and Design Ubiquiti G6 Dome

The Ubiquiti G6 Dome is constructed with a durable metal enclosure that emphasizes strength and reliability. With an IK10 vandal-proof rating, it is capable of withstanding impact and tampering in demanding environments. Measuring 5.7 x 3.8″ (144.7 x 96.3 mm) and weighing 1.8 lb (820 g), the G6 Dome maintains a compact profile while delivering the robust feel expected from professional-grade surveillance hardware.

Installation is designed for flexibility. Standard ceiling and wall mounts are included, while optional accessories such as a gang box plate, dual mount, flush mount, and weather shield allow for tailored deployments. The enclosure carries an IP66 weatherproof rating, ensuring dependable operation in both indoor and outdoor locations.

Inside the housing, Ubiquiti integrates a 1/1.8″ 8MP 4K image sensor paired with built-in IR LED illumination and an IR cut filter for effective night performance. A multi-TOPS AI engine supports advanced smart detections, including people, vehicles, animals, face recognition, and license plate recognition, providing the intelligence required for modern surveillance. The lens is a fixed focal length, delivering a field of view of 134.1° diagonal, 109.9° horizontal, and 56.7° vertical.

Connectivity is streamlined with a 10/100 MbE RJ45 port and PoE power delivery with a maximum draw of 9.25W.

Overall, the G6 Dome combines rugged build quality, versatile installation, weather and tamper resistance, and advanced imaging with AI-driven detection, positioning it as a balanced and reliable surveillance solution.

Lab Testing & Protect Overview

One of the first things we noticed while testing the G6 Dome was how accurate the AI detections remained even when the camera was placed in less-than-ideal positions. Despite challenging angles, the G6 Dome consistently delivered reliable results, which speaks to the strength of the integrated multi-TOPs AI engine.

This unit supports the complete set of UniFi Protect AI detections, including advanced features such as license plate and facial recognition. These capabilities extend beyond basic motion triggers, giving administrators and end users a much more intelligent and context-aware surveillance experience.

Below are some of the detections we observed during testing, including face recognition, person detection, and even speaking activity.

Managing AI events on the G6 Dome is made simple through UniFi Protect’s event filtering system called “Find Anything.” From the Protect dashboard, administrators can drill down into detections for a single camera, making it easy to validate performance or investigate specific activity.

Events can be filtered by type, such as motion or animal detection, as well as by audio triggers, including speaking, barking, car horns, sirens, and glass breakage. Vehicle detections go even further, allowing filtering by type and even color, which makes it possible to quickly isolate events like a specific car entering a lot or a delivery truck arriving.

In our testing, this filtering capability proved especially useful when dealing with high-activity areas. By narrowing events to just “person” or “speaking,” for example, we could focus only on the most relevant activity while ignoring routine background motion. This ensures the G6 Dome delivers not only accurate detections, but also manageable event visibility when deployed in busier environments.

When set up in a traditional ceiling grid mount and aimed at our lab racks, the G6 Dome showcased the strength of its 1/1.8″ 8MP 4K image sensor. The video feed was clear and vivid, with sharpness and balanced contrast that made even small components on the racks easy to identify. Colors appeared accurate, and the footage maintained clarity across a range of lighting conditions, making it well-suited for both live monitoring and post-event review.

The fixed focal length lens provides a 134.1° diagonal, 109.9° horizontal, and 56.7° vertical field of view, delivering broad coverage without noticeable distortion. This combination of resolution and field of view ensures that the G6 Dome captures a broad perspective of the racks while still retaining the fine detail necessary for precise footage reviewing.

Conclusion

The Ubiquiti G6 Dome stands out as a versatile surveillance option that blends rugged durability with advanced intelligence. Its IK10 vandal-proof metal enclosure and IP66 weatherproofing make it well-suited for harsh outdoor environments and high-traffic areas where both resilience and reliability are critical. At the same time, its compact form factor, flexible mounting options, and support for UniFi Protect’s full suite of AI detections provide the adaptability needed for a wide range of deployments, from enterprise campuses to public-facing facilities.

In testing, the G6 Dome proved capable of delivering clear and vivid 4K footage with a wide field of view. At the same time, its AI-powered detections remained accurate even under less-than-ideal placements. Combined with the ability to filter and manage events directly in Protect, this makes the camera not only durable but also highly functional in real-world use.

Priced at $279 on the UniFi Store, the G6 Dome delivers substantial value for those seeking a professional-grade dome camera that balances build quality, smart functionality, and installation flexibility.
